79691 - Thu Mar 26 08:35:57 2009 - [Drunken US Government 101] By: eConomics 101
The financial crisis explained in simple terms.............................

Heidi is the proprietor of a bar in Berlin . In order to increase sales, she decides to allow her loyal customers - most of whom are unemployed alcoholics - to drink now but pay later. She keeps track of the drinks consumed on a ledger (thereby granting the customers loans).

Word gets around and as a result increasing numbers of customers flood into Heidi's bar.

Taking advantage of her customers' freedom from immediate payment constraints, Heidi increases her prices for wine and beer, the most-consumed beverages. Her sales volume increases massively.

A young and dynamic customer service consultant at the local bank recognizes these customer debts as valuable future assets and increases Heidi's borrowing limit.

He sees no reason for undue concern since he has the debts of the alcoholics as collateral.

At the bank's corporate headquarters, expert bankers transform these customer assets into DRINKBONDS, ALKBONDS and PUKEBONDS. These securities are then traded on markets worldwide. No one really understands what these abbreviations mean and how the securities are guaranteed. Nevertheless, as their prices continuously climb, the securities become top-selling items.

One day, although the prices are still climbing, a risk manager (subsequently of course fired due his negativity) of the bank decides that slowly the time has come to demand payment of the debts incurred by the drinkers at Heidi's bar.

However they cannot pay back the debts.

Heidi cannot fulfill her loan obligations and claims bankruptcy.

DRINKBOND and ALKBOND drop in price by 95 %. PUKEBOND performs better, stabilizing in price after dropping by 80 %.

The suppliers of Heidi's bar, having granted her generous payment due dates and having invested in the securities are faced with a new situation. Her wine supplier claims bankruptcy, her beer supplier is taken over by a competitor.

The bank is saved by the Government following dramatic round-the-clock consultations by leaders from the governing political parties.

The funds required for this purpose are obtained by a tax levied on the non-drinkers.

I just read a little story by the News Tribune about how the assessor plans on lowering property taxes by 3% to reflect market trends. Homes that will not see a decrease will be homes that were undervalued before or that have had substantial improvements. Hmm...now, how in the heck do they figure out whose homes are/were undervalued, and when did they discover this? How long have they known about these undervalued properties, and who do they belong to? When they reassess these undervalued properties, are they going to look back to see how long that's been going on, and then send the owners a bill for back taxes...?

Near the bottom of the article, it says that taxes on businesses will likely be raised in order to cover the loss in revenue. Now ain't that just so 'business friendly.' Can't you just see the folks lining up to open businesses here when they find out that taxes will be even higher for them? I'm sure they'd consider it their civic duty to help us out, right? After all, the economy is fueled by sheer and simple altruism. We's all friends.

They asked the Mayor what he's going to do about the revenue loss from this move in 2010, and he said he doesn't know because they haven't even started on looking at the 2010 budget yet.

3% isn't much of a decrease, in my book. I think it's a shell game. And though I give the assessor credit for finally admitting that many, if not most homes are being overassessed, I have a feeling that this move is being done mostly to placate the growing number of disgruntled taxpayers who are tired of the extortion racket, and are thinking seriously about taking action to stop it.

Of course, there was a happy little bright spot- apparently, the housing market in this neck of the woods isn't doing quite as bad as the rest of the state. I suppose that might be almost true...there's alot of government-subsidized housing around here...at least 2/3 of the rent gets paid in those cases, at least.

Don'tcha just love the new welfare class being bred by the Obamanation bailout scheme(and yes, it did start with the TARP scheme under the last administration...the new crooks who got elected have taken that ball and are running with it)? The government is handing out gobs of money to people who are already rich and who helped drive the nation into economic ruin. They are no different than people of low income who are on public assistance, as they are deriving income from the government. We taxpayers are being forced to invest in these welfare classes for different purposes.

So why couldn't these AIG executives and the like take a pay freeze/cut in order to help out the situation? Take NOTICE: because they have CONtracts to honor, just like the ones negotiated by unions who represent government employees. And those contracts, apparently, MUST be honored, come hell or high water, no matter what reality would seem to reasonably indicate...no matter who is left to foot the bill...no matter how devastating it will prove to be for the ones who are paying the bill.

I want to join the Tea Party on the 15th. Is it really going to happen? Where and when will it be held?

Thank you.

Are others starting to get the wonderful news in the mail on their real estate taxes for last year? Hell only a $250 increase this years. Which BTW is more than our total real estate tax was when we moved in. What's the matter with St Louis Co, School District, the City of Duluth and the special taxing district. Let's get those increases up to 500 bucks or more. Meanwhile I sure wish the school district was buying our home. We'll soon find out what the market will give us. If not near the assessed value we are screwed. I don't like the way people laugh at me when I tell them what the city has it assessed for and that we are hoping to get that price for it.

"The UMD Men's hockey team has accomplished so much this season with the usual total lack of support from the Chancellor! The Men's Hockey team is the premier sport at UMD, the one also expected to generate revenue, and she not only refuses to support it but actually goes out of her way to bad mouth her schools top program. Her famous response as to why she never attends the mens games is "I'd rather see a hockey team that wins!"

Looks like she traveled with the wrong team this past weekend???"

The above is dead on correct!! That's really just the tip of the iceberg. The schools premier sport gets NO support from the top. The entire athletic department is forced to revolve around the Women's Hockey Team and its head coach because of the boss's obsession with it! (The women's team looses the department hundreds of thousands a year) Morale is in the toilet up there because of it!

On that note, good luck to the boys this weekend. Go Dogs!

Duluth district to spend $407 million on new schools... without a vote
________________________________________
Like many large-scale school facilities projects, the Duluth School District's Long Range Facilities Project - commonly referred to as the "Red Plan" - has been the subject of intense debate and scrutiny. Residents have raised concerns about the project's exorbitant price tag, a record-breaking $407 million including interest. Many have questioned the district's seemingly cozy relationship with the contractor in charge of the Red Plan, Johnson Controls, Inc (JCI). And like some controversial school ballot initiatives, the Red Plan has, unfortunately, pitted the public school establishment against parents and district taxpayers.

But something sets the Red Plan apart from so many ballot initiatives that preceded it. The Red Plan was never on a ballot.

That's right, the Duluth school district is planning to spend $407 million on school faci lities that the public never even had a chance to vote on. Instead, the school board exploited a legal loophole allowing districts to use alternative facilities bonding for critical "fire, safety or health repairs." However, as the price tag suggests, the Red Plan consists of far more than a few fire and safety repairs; instead, it is a wholesale district-wide overhaul that will "divest 13 properties, it will purchase other properties, it will build three new schools, and it will remodel 10 schools."

Former state representative Mike Jaros (DFL-Duluth) has accused the district of misusing the law, which he previously supported: "Duluth school board had a special l a w that I passed, the same as Minneapolis and St. Paul, to help them with desegregation, health and safety emergency problems, to take care of, so they wouldn't have to go to the public to ask for a referendum." Jaros went on to say that the school board "abused" the law.

The school board adopted the Red Plan in June 2007, and public resentment toward the district has been growing ever since. With construction scheduled to begin this Spring, public opposition has taken on a new sense of urgency. And some voters in Duluth are not taking this heavy-handed act by school administrators lightly. In fact, earlier this month, five taxpayers filed a lawsuit against the district and JCI alleging that the Red Plan "violates state laws requiring local units of government to abide by thei r competitive bidding policies on major contracts."

The Red Plan, and its associated tax burden, could not come at a worse time. Duluth's population is rapidly aging, its median household income is significantly lower than the rest of St. Louis County, and families make up just 56.1% of the city's population. Many taxpayers of modest means and on fixed incomes are being asked to foot the bill for the Red Plan, and they were never even allowed to vote on it.

79675 - Wed Mar 25 00:38:47 2009 - [Home sales due to foreclosures] By: JBBP
I happened to briefly catch a part of a news story on the economy. Of course, it was presented in the typical happified manner. After all, we have all these financial geniuses at the helm because of the last election 'n all.

It came to the subject of housing sales, and how they seem to have gone up about 15%, if I remember correctly.

Well, duh...people had to lower their prices in order to even have a snowball's chance in Hades to get out from under their mortgage debt. Of course there are people who will be more than happy to scoop up these properties being sold under financial duress. Some of these properties have sat on the market for months or even years, and many are foreclosures. Sellers are taking huge losses on the overinflated mortgages they signed up for, and have to pay off despite declining market values(that's real world market values, not the tax assessors').

I don't view the increase in home buying as all that positive, really. The ones who are being forced to sell are the ones taking the hit. It's actually kind of sad.

So...now that many of these homes have sold at a much lower price than they were previously mortgaged, tax assessed and insured for, will the taxes and insurance rates be lowered on them, as well? How many hoops would the new owners need to jump through to accomplish that?

Thank you.

The writer is talking about Vallejo, but you could certainly insert Duluth into every place Vallejo is mentioned, couldn’t you:

No stake in the city
Posted: 03/22/2009 07:38:50 AM PDT

I find it both amazing and amusing that most of the police officers and firefighters who write to the Times-Herald's opinion page (i.e. Todd Swanson , Ken Werris, Kurt Henke, to name a few) are all residents of cities other than Vallejo.

Their only stake in Vallejo's bankruptcy proceedings is their contracts. They most certainly couldn't care less about the fate of our city or how we fare just as long as they can collect the highest wages in the state for their professions.

They cry to us and yet they take their paychecks from our city tax dollars and spend them in another city. This seems to be the case in a large percentage of our firefighters and police officers. Vallejo is not a good enough place for them to live, but it's good enough to collect their bloated paychecks. That sure isn't civic pride!

Perhaps soon they'll only be able to "afford" to live in Vallejo.

A little boy wanted $100.00 very badly and prayed for weeks, but nothing happened. Then he decided to write God a letter requesting the $100.00.

When the postal authorities received the letter to God , USA , they decided to send it to President Obama. The president was so amused that he instructed his secretary to send the little boy a $5.00 bill. The president thought that this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy.

The little boy was delighted with the $5.00 bill and sat down to write a thank-you note to God, which read:

Dear God,

Thank you very much for sending the money. However, I noticed that for some reason you sent it through Washington , DC , and that asshole Obama took $95.00 in taxes.

Truthism,

With all due respect, Clinton balanced the budget for 3 or his eight years by taking from social security, the largest Ponzi scheme in the world.

During the Clinton presidency, from 1993 to 2001, the national debt went from $4,411,488,883,139.38 to $5,807,463,412,200.06.

Under Bush is the national debt exploded to $10,024,724,896,912.49.

Unfortunate Americans are only beginning to realize that Obama is a Bush on steroids. Current projections have Obama piling on another $9,000,000,000.00 of debt, almost doubling where the US left off with Bush.

Those are the simple facts provided by our government.

There is no need for name calling and odd or perverse language with me Truthism. I am neither a DFLer or GOPer. I am an American with my eyes wide open who does not like what I am seeing by either of the prevailing political parties.

I found there are nearly 300,000 firefighters across the nation who use this shift due to a cost savings to the city they work for (See the IAFF website). Tell me why nearly all the cities across the country (and world) use this shift if it's such a bad idea. Well, a bad idea to some dumbass living in mom's basement. If you have a bitch about another union in the area, I'm ready for you and you'll save me from having to RESEARCH my information.

MODERATOR: Clueless DFDer, if 24 hour shifts are such a cost savings, then why is DFD one of the most expensive departments in the entire state? Why do you DFLers compare other areas to Duluth when you want to justify your greed, yet when the comparison doesn't help you steal more, you say that Duluth can not be compared to these other areas? For example, why are Duluthians forced to pay twice the rate for natural gas than those living in St. Cloud? Because DFL Duluth likes to stick an IV into its host, the taxpayers, everywhere it can. DFL Duluth is bleeding this once great city for the few DFLers to live better while the rest of society is forced to pay for this immoral fleecing.

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929-1935 about 20 million dissidents were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939-1945, a total of 13 million were rounded up and exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948-1952, 20 million dissidents were rounded up and exterminated.

From these historical facts we can see that we need gun control in America because we have far too many deaths due to guns.

79641 - Mon Mar 23 11:18:18 2009 - [DFDer tries to spin the truth] By: Truthism
Heard this on the radio this morning and would love to hear the GOP bastard DCB'ers answer to this:
There is a plan to change the way companies hire young people, pack them in a van, and take them around the country to sell books. There is currently little watch over this practice which led to the deaths of several young people a while back when a van crashed. The last time there was a law about to be put in place the GOP shut it down because of the possibility of lost revenue for the companies. WHAT are these people thinking?? This is why I support the DFL who fight for worker safety rather than the mighty dollar! I can't believe you jackasses say the DFL is greedy while your leaders put money ahead of human lives.

MODERATOR: Truthism, I don't know about what GOPers think, but as a Duluth resident I can share this. You are a DFLer not because of all the safety BS you speak of, but rather because you can line your pockets at the expense of me and others in this fine city. You formed the DFDPAC simply to ensure that you could buy the best politicians to further your cause and so far it has worked out well for you and your DFD buddies. However, if you look at the big picture, ie, put down the Kool Aid for a minute, you will see that Duluth is broke and the only way out is for government cutbacks. Raising taxes on a population of which almost half earns less than $10/hour will not work. Stealing from other parts of the state, ie LGA is not only immoral, but unsustainable. Yet, your DFL cheerleader, mayor Ness, takes every opportunity to get his hands into other governmental agencies pockets for more FREE money. When will you DFL idiots realize that money is not FREE? We should start by cutting the DFD to 12 hour shifts and go from there. How about that for change we can all believe in? Sleeping on the job while stealing the money from taxpayers is not a RIGHT in this country. I know many of you DFDers feel and act like you are better than the rest of society and have special rights, but this is simply not the reality. Let's gut the DFL fat and grow the economy so that others can live a decent life instead of just being forced to pay for you and your greedy bros at DFD?

STARFIRE: He gets more done during a UMD hockey game than all the DFDers in the city of Duluth on any given day and he does it simply because he is on his two feet and the DFDers are either on their asses watching Backdraft, blogging on the DCB in the Lazy Boy, or in the sack on the taxpayer dime. How is that working for you Big Iron? And I have no use for Sandelin so what kind of impression do you think I have of Duluth's finest grubs, the DFD? More $$$$, more $$$$ and more $$$$. 79632 - Sun Mar 22 13:46:03 2009 - [Open your eyes and ears] By: The Change is here
There was a Pied Piper who said,

"We live in the greatest country in the world. Help me change it!"
*And the people said, "Change is good!"

Then he said, "We are going to tax the rich fat-cats,".*And the people said "Sock it to them!"

"and redistribute their wealth."
*And the people said, "Show me the money!"

And then he said, "Redistribution of wealth is good for everybody"
*And Joe the plumber said, are you kidding me?"

And Joe's personal records were hacked and publicized.
*And one lone reporter asked, "Isn't that Marxist policy?"

And she was banished from the kingdom!
Then someone asked, "With no foreign relations experience, how will you deal with radical terrorists?"

And the Pied Piper said, "Simple. I'll sit down and talk with them and show them how nice we really are and they'll forget that they ever wanted to kill us all!"

Then the Pied Piper said, "I'll give 95% of you lower taxes."
*And one, lone voice said, "But 40% of us don't pay ANY taxes."

So the Pied Piper said, "Then I'll give you some of the taxes the fat-cats pay!"
*And the people said, "Show me the money!"

Then the Pied Piper said, "I'll tax your Capital Gains when you sell your homes!"
*And the people yawned and the slumping housing market collapsed.

And he said, "I'll mandate employer- funded health care for EVERY worker and raise the minimum wage."
*And the people said, "Gim'me some of that!"

Then he said, "I'll penalize employers who ship jobs overseas."
*And the people said, "Where's my rebate check?"

Then the Pied Piper actually said, "I'll bankrupt the coal industry and electricity rates will skyrocket!"
*And the people said, "Coal is dirty, coal is evil, no more coal! But we don't care for that part about higher electric rates."

So the Pied Piper said, "Not to worry. If your rebate isn't enough to cover your expenses, we'll bail you out. Just sign up with ACORN and your troubles are over!" Then he said, "Illegal immigrants feel scorned and slighted. Let's grant them amnesty, Social Security, free education, free lunches, free medical care, bi-lingual signs and guaranteed housing."
*And the people said, "Ole`! Bravo!" And they made him King!

And so it came to pass that employers, facing spiraling costs and ever-higher taxes, raised their prices and laid off workers. Others simply gave up and went out of business and the economy slowed even further. Then the Pied Piper said, "I am the Messiah and I'm here to save you! We'll just print more money so everyone will have enough!" But our foreign trading partners said, "Wait a minute. Your dollar isn't worth what it was. You'll have to pay more."
*And the people said, "Wait a minute. That's not fair!"

And the world said, "Neither are these other, idiotic programs you've embraced. You've become a Socialist state and a second-rate power. Now you'll play by our rules!"
*And the people said, "What have we done?"

But it was too late.
If you think this is a fairy tale, open your eyes and ears. It's happening RIGHT NOW!

Was Obama's remark about his bowling skills being like "the Special Olympics" intended to cause hurt for disabled people?

I don't think so...it seems he just simply forgot that he cares about their feelings. After all, the election's over.

It does display his arrogance/ignorance...he figures he's so popular, why, everyone will just think along the same lines as he does and get a kick out of whatever gaff comes out of his mouth.

I realize that people say dumb things all the time; however, this guy is supposed to be the president, not the next-door neighbor.

These days- thankfully- people are called on the carpet for making jokes that are insulting to race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. That's because these groups are quite vocal about it, and their representatives incite an outcry of indignation from the members of such groups.

Perhaps Obama forgot that people competing in the Special Olympics do indeed have advocates...and some of them can even advocate for themselves. Vocally.

Maybe his next gaff will be something having to do with unborn children...after all, they can't say much about it.

Oh, that's right- he's rabidly pro-choice, and is working hard to free up any restrictions imposed on abortion by the past administration. His actions speak for his attitude towards that segment of humanity already. Loud and clear.

President Bush got completely made fun of for the way he talked and used language. President Obama needs to watch what he says.

Who do you suppose he compares himself to in other aspects of his skills...or his life?

Thank you.

Minnesota unemployment continues to climb

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota’s unemployment rate continued to climb in February, hitting a seasonally adjusted 8.1 percent as the state shed another 13,300 jobs.

The state Department of Employment and Economic Development reported today that the state’s February unemployment rate nearly matches that of the nation as a whole.

“The global recession has touched nearly all business sectors, here and elsewhere in the country,” said DEED Commissioner Dan McElroy in a prepared statement.

“But we saw some signs of improvement in Minnesota in February, including a slowdown in the number of jobs lost and a slightly better labor force participation rate,” he said.

Minnesota’s unemployment rate was 7.5 percent in January, when the state lost 18,500 jobs.

Meanwhile, unemployment in the Duluth-Superior metropolitan statistical area (including St. Louis, Douglas and Carlton counties) came in at 9.9 percent before seasonal adjustments; seasonally adjusted numbers were not available. February unemployment figures for this area are expected to be published next week.

The Twin Ports job outlook may have improved slightly in February, according to Drew Digby, a regional labor analyst for the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. He noted that current employment statistics released Thursday show 128,603 people working in the Duluth-Superior metro area in February — up 0.5 percent from the previous month. Compared with February 2008, however, total employment in the area was down 2.3 percent.

Minnesota has lost 3.2 percent of its jobs in the past 12 months, nearly mirroring the national rate of 3.1 percent. In real terms, Minnesota lost nearly 86,000 jobs since February 2008.

From January to February, the education and health care sector added 2,100 jobs. The biggest month-to-month loser was manufacturing, which lost 5,100 jobs.

Those sectors were also among the high and low spots in the labor market in the past 12 months. Education and health care added 15,600 jobs since February 2008, while manufacturing dropped 25,700 jobs — close to the 27,600 jobs lost in professional and business services.

The February report also said that all the metro areas with data available have now lost jobs in the past 12 months, including Minneapolis-St. Paul, down 60,900 jobs; Duluth-Superior, down 3,100; St. Cloud, down 1,200; and Rochester, down 200.

Rochester, with its strong health care industry, was in positive territory for the 12 months ending in January. DEED didn’t report results for the Fargo-Moorhead and Grand Forks-East Grand Forks metro areas today because the data from North Dakota was not available.

Dear Starfire, I am old, I lived in this area for 40 some odd years, I lived in Arizona for 13 years. A republican state. I saw how anti-unionism worked. I made good money there. But then, I saw how greed worked. Greed is what is bringing our economy to where it is. STARFIRE: bigfoot, for those freedoms you may want to thank a soldier. As far as Arizona goes, I thought it was one of the 50 U.S. states and part of our great democracy. You will continue losing both readers and bloggers because you have such a one sided opinionated site. Most people would like to hear both sides, and decide who they agree with, but you people think you have the only opinion that is right, and you will only post people that agree with that opinion. Bitch and moan, Bitch and moan, that's all I hear.
Where are the ideas for improvement, besides firing all afscme employees and reducing your taxes? Get involved!! How many people who blog on this sight voted? STARFIRE: bigfoot, so what is your point, that free speech is not praticed here, which as you can see, your adverse opinion is printed, and therefore makes that a mute point or that voting would or could somehow change the area for the better? How is this even possible when the AFSCME and DFL special interests spend in excess of $133,000 to purchase politicians to carry out their agendas for positions that pay only $10,000 a year? Do you even have a clue what the hell you are saying? Have you ever traveled ouside of the city limits? Do you know that Duluth is not the hub of the universe? How is it possible for politicians of the DFL AFSCME gnag to get elected in this area decade after decade and still we have the lowest wages in the state and the highest unemployment. What has the DFL done for Duluth in general outside of that which they do for their own? Nothing.

Yes, bring on another fuel tax. Giving politicians money is the same as giving teenagers whisky and fast cars. No good comes of it.

Managing the infrastructure is job 2, right after public safety. Just where has the money been spent? Human rights offices? Railroads to nowhere? "Add your favorite boondoggles here
. Obviously very little of the generous sums we provide now are actually applied to maintenance and repair.

In reality, only about 31 cents of every dollar collected from fuel taxes actually get to transportation projects. Not just roads and bridges. The balance is wasted in management and overhead.

Another fuel tax will only raise the cost of living. The sorry politicians we have now will only waste the money on getting re-elected.

Throw all the bums out, repeat the process a couple of times and see what we can get then.

Or, are we as stupid as they think?

Reader's view: Politicians want yet another highway tax

I hope this letter is read by U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar and other politicians who seem to believe taxpayers of this country should pay for road repairs time and time again.

The U.S. highway system is a public trust. So is the political system to which politicians are elected. It’s their job to maintain the public’s faith in both systems.

Recent news regarding government spending, tax cuts and tax increases included the possibility of increasing the federal highway use tax and/or creating a mileage tax. Every new administration tries to increase the highway use tax, and I find the idea moronic. More importantly, politicians have decided to include a use tax on top of the road tax.

The people of this country have paid a use tax piggy backed on top of a state highway tax at the pump for years, and all the federal government has to show for the effort is empty pockets.

If the U.S. government had maintained the interstate highway system the way President Eisenhower intended, there would not be holes in highways big enough to eat Volkswagens and there would not be bridges accidently falling down.

The U.S. has rebuilt the economies of Japan, Germany and Korea and is now rebuilding Iraq. I know citizens of the U.S. have built the majority of roads, bridges and dams in Korea. I am also sure taxpayers’ money has been used to build roads and complete other projects in Vietnam and Iraq.

The politicians in Washington seem to have decided the American people are stupid. The powers that be gave out stimulus checks last year took them back in federal tax returns.

This was all designed so we American taxpayers get stuck with new infrastructure repairs and politicians’ next pay raise.

Reader's view: Duluth needs to better maintain its streets

I spent the first 22 wonderful years of my life growing up in Duluth. I now live in the Seattle area but come back to Duluth as often as possible to visit family.

I fondly (sarcastic) remember learning how to see and dodge the legendary potholes when my father taught me to drive. I also remember lots of the jokes! Well, maybe I’ve been away from them for too long that my memory has faded, but in driving around the city recently, I think the roads are in the worst shape I can remember.

I grew up in Lakeside. Now, Glenwood Street is downright dangerous. I think there is one pothole in which a car could be lost.

I’d like to congratulate the Local 107th of the Pothole Diggers Union for exceeding even Minnesota standards! Hopefully, some of this economic stimulus money can come Duluth’s way to fix the roads.

I love Duluth, and it’s still a neat city — bad roads or not.

How ironic that "wideload" who's obviously a disciple of Saul Alinsky (The mentor of contemporary Red Diaper Doper Babies like the gang at prog. action) is familiar with Alinskys rules for radicals. Cripes. The rules sound *exactly* like the playbook progressive action uses ! Theirs is a small group of disenfranchised and disaffected people who hate the mainstream community they live in, and are doing everything in their sick minds to create a new (dysfunctional) "community" based upon their neo-communist agenda. They hide their small numbers on a blog and in an organization where there is no accountability and no moderation, thereby making it difficult to know who is involved. They create a constant din with multiple handles to make it seem like there are more of them than there truly are. They work hard to build resentments, fan hostilities, infiltrate universities (i.e. UMD, UWS), infiltrate blogs, infiltrate local politics, infiltrate local churches and search out controversies as they try to destroy the community and values they hate and want to "change" so much. They try to create confusion and fear in their opponents by ridiculing them with vicious personal attacks and implicit threats (like those on the "watch") . They obviously get their rocks off doing what they do, god (if they even believe in a god) knows where they find the time (perhaps they are living off trust funds, acting like they have jobs but don't do any real work, or anything of real value to society). They don't attack abstract corporations or corrupt bureaucracies, they identify and attack individuals who they perceive as a threat to their agenda. (They remind me of the "Borg" on Star Trek, destroy and assimilate "communities" they infest.) They consider those who don't drink their kool-aid responsible for their problems. They complain *constantly* about what's wrong with Duluth, and blame the DCB for lack of economic development in Duluth. They're not interested in solutions, only in spreading their cancerous neo-communist ideology in our community.

79585 - Thu Mar 19 13:15:13 2009 - [Wild assumptions ] By: Dead Inside
At this dire time in our city, I think we all need to remember one important thing. Whenever the DNT describes a criminal in the news as white/black/asian/indian/french/latin/spanish/etc, they are describing them not to make people aware of them if they see suspicious activity. They are describing them because they are, like, totally racist, and are trying to start a race war here in the north. So, the next time you see a description of a criminal with their ethnic backround, just ignore that and start making wild assumptions about any suspicious activities you may see. Different colors are not a legitimate part of this world and should have no bearing on any given criminal. The police should just pick up anyone who generally matches the height, weight, facial features, tatoos and clothing of the suspected individual. Chances are they got the wrong person but the person they DID pick up probably was thinking something criminal anyways, so it's all win.

They warned me that if I voted for McCain, the US would become more deeply embroiled in the Middle East, and sure enough, thousands of additional troops are scheduled to be deployed into Afghanistan.

They warned me that if I voted for McCain, that the economy would get even worse and sure enough, unemployment is approaching 8.8% and the new stimulus packages implemented recently have sent the stock market lower than at any time since 9-11.

They warned me that if I voted for McCain, we would see more "crooks" in high ranking positions in Federal government and sure enough, several recent cabinet nominees and Senate appointments revealed resumes of scandal, bribery and tax fraud.

They warned me that if I voted for McCain, we would see more "Pork at the trough" in Federal government spending and sure enough, over 9,000 "earmark Pork Bills" showed up in the bailout in the past few weeks ... several hundred billions for the politicians and lobbyists's pet projects ... and to buy more power and votes.

They told me if I voted for McCain, we would see more deficit spending in DC and sure enough, Pelosi, Reid, Barney, ad infinitum and some worthless republicans have spent more in 30 days than all other Presidents together in the history of the good'ole USA....

I ignored my Democrat friends in November and voted for McCain/Palin.

Damned if they weren't right ... and I still hate to admit it, but all of their predictions have come true.

Reader's view: The cost of selling city-owned utility will be high

About a month ago, on a Sunday evening, my wife became concerned with the odor of natural gas in our kitchen. Unable to detect its source, I suggested she call our city-owned gas utility, Comfort Systems. Within a few minutes, a friendly, competent technician was at our door. He quickly diagnosed and remedied our problem. My guess is that most Duluthians have had similar experiences.

On Monday, the City Council will consider a proposal to hire a consultant at a cost of $60,000 to advise it on the feasibility of selling the gas utility. The city charter clearly states in Chapter X, Section 77 that a two-thirds majority vote of the public would be required to sell a city-owned public utility.

With libraries having severely curtailed hours, recreational centers reduced to near non-existence and our infrastructure crumbling, couldn’t this $60,000 be better spent? Why would we forego future income from an efficiently run public utility that is responsive to and owned by the citizens of Duluth in order to gain a short-term infusion of cash?

What will it cost down the line to have a technician come out to our homes in the event we smell gas and our public utility is in the hands of a for-profit, private company?

RESALE to civilian reloaders of surplus brass NO longer allowed by Obama's Defense Dept, says reloader in Georgia!! If this becomes POLICY: Time to fire-up your Senators and Representative.. these Democrat control-freaks ARE dangerous!!

"The Department of Defense has issued a directive that bans the sale of military brass to ammunition re-manufacturers.

Without that brass, a very large dent is put into civilian ammunition supplies."

No Longer Just Paranoia

http://www.shootingwire.com/

For months, anyone who's proffered the position that the Obama Administration was anti-gun has been dismissed as being a variety of things, from sore loser to rampant paranoid. Nonetheless, since assuming office, members of the Obama administration have steadily- and stealthily- moved against firearms and ammunition.

Their only public blunder was Attorney General Holder's saying the "assault weapons ban" needed to be reinstated. Quickly, House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi - no friend of gun owners - went on record as opposing Holder's suggestion. She went as far as to parrot the words of pro-gun groups, saying the government should enforce the laws on the books today, rather than introducing new laws.

At the same time, the State Department notified Canadian authorities of plans to issue an export ban on "military caliber ammunition" to Canada. That proposed action would prevent the sales of .223, .308 and other military calibers.

When Canadian authorities protested - and notified several members of the American media, the U.S. State Department suddenly went silent. But they quietly reinstated other rules and charges firearms exports-retroactively.

While it seemed they had been headed off on one proposal, they had actually drawn attention away from other actions. If you're into incrementalism, that translates as a win.

Anything passed brings the ultimate goal that much closer.

Last Friday, the anglers and hunters were notified that the National Park Service planned to make all lands under their control totally lead-free by 2010. No lead in ammo or fishing tackle.

As we report in today's Outdoor Wire, that decision has kicked off howls of protests - and questions about the NPS trying to usurp states' rights by issuing their unilateral decision with no prior notification. It's definitely not going to be a decision without some serious discussions. That still doesn't mean the NPS will back off on their decision.

All these things are racing along on parallel tracks. Now, many observers - and not just those on the pro-gun side of the discussion - believe the country is hurtling toward a confrontation.

The catalyst might be any one of several flashpoint issues, but both groups seem to believe a reckoning is unavoidable.

For months, I've gotten reports of everything from re-tasking of military heavy assault units for domestic violence scenarios to calls for "committees of correspondence" designed to spread news the way word was spread by citizens of the then-British colonies.

In each instance, I've discounted the reports as internet hysteria that has produced breathless notices of "the real-deal on the new assault weapon ban"- or references to HR45 - a gun registration bill that is a prime example of "eyewash legislation". It's purpose has already been achieved.

Part of that discounting has been due to the fact that hot-blooded rhetoric seems to run along with firearms ownership.

To the chagrin of industry officials, there's never a shortage of people willing to go on camera, get red-faced and spout "from my cold dead hands" phrases.

Admittedly, those people concern me, but more for their reinforcement of a negative stereotype to people who have no opinion one way or the other on firearms.

Today, however, a report that has nothing to do with rhetoric, hyperbole or rumor.

A very disturbing report that points to a very real assault on ammunition supplies.

The Department of Defense has issued a directive that bans the sale of military brass to ammunition re-manufacturers.

Without that brass, a very large dent is put into civilian ammunition supplies.

New Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service (DRMS) requirements call for the "mutilation of shell casings". Mutilation, incidentally, is the destruction of the property "to the extent that prevents its reuse or reconstruction".

Government officials will determine what constitutes "sufficient mutilation" but it's safe to say that it will no longer be suitable for remanufacturing.

The first word of this latest decision came over the weekend when Georgia Arms' Larry Haynie released a letter notifying him of the new requirement.

For a company with an order in for 30,000 pounds of expended military brass in .223, .308 and .50 BMG, that was not a pleasant notification.

Georgia Arms was remanufacturing more than one million rounds of .223 ammunition monthly; selling that ammo on the civilian market to resellers and to government agencies all over the country.

Tomorrow, Georgia Arms will start sending cancellation notices for .223 ammunition to law enforcement agencies across the United States. Haynie says he may have to layoff half of his sixty-person workforce.

The message is simple. The implication is chilling.

A new welcome page posted on Georgia Arms' website (www.georgia-arms.com) says simply "Due to new government regulations concerning the purchase of surplus brass, we are removing sales of all 223 and all 308 until further notice."

From there, it directs visitors to the government website for contacting elected representatives.

All of us need to start contacting our elected representatives -and telling them, quite directly, that we're not going to put up with a move that not only curtails access to ammunition (nearly all .223 and .308 manufacturing capacity is tied up to satisfy the needs of the military) for civilians - but wastes taxpayers' money turning usable surplus into scrap metal.

Reducing the ammo brass to scrap reduces the value of the metal/surplus by nearly eighty percent. It also means that recast brass - in shippable form - may be shipped to China, one of the largest markets for U.S. metals on the world market.

If this is allowed to go unchallenged, anyone who owns a modern or traditional rifle in .223 or .308 calibers will see the impact- probably sooner than later.

"Anyone" in this context means everyone from recreational shooters to law enforcement trainers.

Pulling military brass out of the consumer supply chain means that all the manufacturing capacity being dedicated to meeting the military need will effectively become unavailable to civilians - forever.

Export rulings, lead bans, and brass mutilation orders from separate areas of the federal government look coincidental - on the surface. I'm not big on conspiracy theories - partially because I doubted the new administration would have gotten its collective act together so rapidly.

Seems I've been wrong on that one - and mistakenly using the word "hoard" when talking about the nearly-insatiable demand for ammunition that continues across the country. Today, laying up of ammunition might be better described as prudent preparation for possible problems.

States are beginning to serve notice to the federal government they will not enforce laws that violate individual rights. The federal government seems intent on creating a society with increasingly higher numbers of people dependent on the government for either sustenance or employment. Average citizens are beginning to grow tired of being asked to "tote the note" for others' irresponsibility.

These are, indeed, uncertain times.

Today, it's important that every reader take time to notify Congress that we - taxpayers - oppose this latest DOD move- and all the other not-so-subtle moves against gun owners.

You can contact your elected officials in Washington by going to this webpage http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml and following the links to your respective Senator or Congressman.

One key member of the United States Senate is Montana's Senator Max Baucus, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. Baucus could make a call to the Pentagon and let them know their budgets might be reexamined if they don't reconsider this latest directive. At that point, the directive might labeled a "misunderstanding" and rescinded.

But it is important that we keep pressure on Congress.

If that means phone calls, e-mails, and letters, let's get that done. If that doesn't produce results, we need to look beyond symbolic gestures like sending tea bags or bringing hundreds of thousands of gun owners to Washington and state capitols to protest.

These are, indeed, uncertain times. But the time for uncertain actions may be passing.

We'll keep you posted. In the meantime, maintain situational awareness.

Does anyone else think it is ironic that Obama wants the AIG execs to give back bonuses, yet did nothing about the earmarks in the budget bill he signed. He stated it was "left-overs" from the previous administration and therefore should go through. But when it comes to someones compensation contracts which were also signed during the last administration he wants them to be withdrawn. Is this the pot calling the kettle black.

Sarah Jane Olson is back on the streets with her Progressive Action cohorts. Since her early involvement in terrorism while dating J. Kilgore, she has proven herself as a left wing terrorist that Progressive Action is now modeled after. Will she become another steering committee member at Progressive Action in Duluth and join the likes of her other California relative? Only time will tell.

DFL and Progressive Action bring terrorism to a new level. From sharpshooting to bombings, they want to take your rights away so that they are the only ones left who have them. Hide the dog, hide the family, she is back. The job market for the bomb squad just got better. Go Progressives!

DLFer and Progressive Sara Jane Olson released to serve parole in Minnesota

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-sara-jane-olson18-2009mar18,0,6830812.story

Sara Jane Olson, a former member of the Symbionese Liberation Army, was released from the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla today and cleared to serve parole in Minnesota, Minn.
Efforts to keep the ex-Symbionese Liberation Army member in California fail. The former Kathleen Soliah served seven years for a robbery in which a woman died and for a bid to blow up LAPD officers.
By Andrew Blankstein

Culminating a case that has evoked history and strong emotions, former Symbionese Liberation Army member Sara Jane Olson was released from state prison Tuesday and cleared to serve supervised parole in Minnesota after completing a seven-year sentence for bank robbery and attempting to kill Los Angeles police officers.

Olson left the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla shortly after midnight Tuesday and was taken by van to the Madera County parole office, where she was processed and released, said Terry Thornton, spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. She left with her husband, Thornton said.

Police union wants Sara Jane Olson to...David Nickerson, one of Olson's attorneys, said he spoke briefly with his client, who expressed relief at being out of prison, but did not detail her immediate plans.

"She talked about what happened and how happy she was to be out, what you would expect," Nickerson said.

Los Angeles police union officials, who mounted an eleventh-hour campaign to prevent Olson's out-of-state parole, said they were "extremely disappointed" by the decision to allow her to go to Minnesota and criticized Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for not intervening in the case.

"We believe the governor should have used his discretion in this matter to ensure Olson stay under the watch of California authorities as she finished out her sentence," said Paul M. Weber, president of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, which represents the LAPD's 9,800 officers.

Olson was one of five SLA members -- including Emily Montague-Harris, William Taylor Harris, Michael Alexander Bortin and James William Kilgore -- who pleaded guilty in Sacramento County to second-degree murder in the death of Myrna Opsahl during the April 21, 1975, robbery of Crocker National Bank in suburban Carmichael.

Then known as Kathleen Soliah, Olson was inside the bank and armed at the time Opsahl, a 42-year-old mother of four, was fatally shot. The case took on added notoriety because kidnapped newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst admitted being the getaway driver and described in a book how the robbery and killing took place. Hearst was not charged in that case, but served a two-year federal prison sentence for a San Francisco bank robbery. Her sentence was later commuted by President Carter, and she was pardoned in 2001 by President Clinton.

In addition to the bank robbery, Olson admitted taking part in an August 1975 plan to place pipe bombs beneath Los Angeles police squad cars to avenge a shootout in South Los Angeles that left six SLA members dead. The bombs did not detonate, and in 1976 she was indicted by the Los Angeles County Grand Jury for attempting to kill two LAPD officers.

By then, Olson had gone underground. She changed her name and eventually married a Midwestern emergency room physician and raised three daughters. She lived as a fugitive in Zimbabwe and St. Paul, Minn., where she was active in community theater and volunteer work for the blind.

But the refashioned soccer mom could not escape her past. In June 16, 1999, she was arrested after police received tips about her identity from old acquaintances and viewers of the TV show "America's Most Wanted," which publicized a $20,000 FBI reward for her arrest.

Olson began serving a seven-year prison sentence in 2002. Her time behind bars was uneventful until March 2008, when, because of a clerical error, she was released a year early. She was promptly rearrested as she prepared to fly home to Minnesota to serve supervised parole.

In the lead-up to her release Tuesday, the Police Protective League again made her parole to Minnesota an issue, arguing that California had a greater interest in seeing Olson abide by the conditions set out by state corrections authorities.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty even wrote Schwarzenegger in an effort to keep Olson in California.

Legal experts and her lawyers argued that she had served her sentence and that she would better adjust to civilian life where she had a strong support network.

"Minneapolis is where she lived for decades," Nickerson said. "That's where her husband is, that's where her children are and it would make absolutely no sense to parole her anywhere else."

The little red hen called all of her Obama 'Stimulus' supporting neighbors together and said, "If we plant this wheat, we shall have bread to eat. Who will help me plant it?"

Not I," said the cow.

"Not I," said the duck.

"Not I," said the pig.

"Not I," said the goose.

"Then I will do it by myself," said the little red hen, and so she did. The wheat grew very tall and ripened into golden grain.

"Who will help me reap my wheat?" asked the little red hen.

"Not I," said the duck.

"Out of my classification," said the pig.

"I'd lose my seniority," said the cow.

"I'd lose my unemployment compensation," said the goose.

"Then I will do it by myself," said the little red hen, and so she did.

At last it came time to bake the bread.

"Who will help me bake the bread?" asked the little red hen.

"That would be overtime for me," said the cow.

"I'd lose my welfare benefits," said the duck.

"I'm a dropout and never learned how," said the pig.

"If I'm to be the only helper, that's discrimination," said the goose.

"Then I will do it by myself," said the little red hen.

She baked five loaves and held them up for all of her neighbors to see. They wanted some and, in fact, demanded a share. But the little red hen said, "No, I shall eat all five loaves."

"Excess profits!" cried the cow. (Nancy Pelosi)

"Capitalist leech!" screamed the duck. (Barbara Boxer)

"I demand equal rights!" yelled the goose. (Jesse Jackson)

The pig just grunted in disdain. (Ted Kennedy)

And they all painted 'Unfair!' picket signs and marched around and around the little red hen, shouting obscenities.

Then the farmer (Obama) came. He said to the little red hen, "You must not be so greedy."

"But I earned the bread," said the little red hen.

"Exactly," said Barack the farmer. "That is what makes our free enterprise system so wonderful. Anyone in the barnyard can earn as much as he wants. But under our modern government regulations, the productive workers must divide the fruits of their labor with those who are lazy and idle."

And they all lived happily ever after, including the little red hen, who smiled and clucked, "I am grateful, for now I truly understand."

But her neighbors became quite disappointed in her. She never again baked bread because she joined the 'party' and got her bread free. And all the Democrats smiled. 'Fairness' had been established.

Individual initiative had died, but nobody noticed; perhaps no one cared...so long as there was free bread that 'the rich' were paying for.

EPILOGUE

Hillary got $8 million for hers.

Big Iron, I can't realistically run for any sort of office, especially if I wanted to win, as I have had a very "colorful" personal life that would most certainly be used against me. I have adopted a somewhat pragmatic approach to this element about myself, along with other matters.

It's kind of sad, because people like me know, through experience, the folly of not bothering to see beyond the moment, AND how to not be blinded to the dazzle of bullshit.

For example, a legless creature slithers into a room. It gives everyone a smile. Folks are charmed by it, as it's so friendly, and probably can't do much harm because, after all, the poor thing has no legs...and wonder of wonders, how does it get around so well without legs, anyway? We need to admire and respect it, they say to themselves. Somebody like me says whoa, stay away from that thing! It's a snake...but because I am one who didn't know enough before to stay away from snakes, they won't listen...the folks continue to be charmed by it, and it even talks them into picking some forbidden fruit.

Creationism, political-style.

Thank you.

79535 - Mon Mar 16 15:04:42 2009 - [And now you know the rest of the story] By: Jeanne
This is the real truth.

This is how it began: Barack Obama was a lawyer for the group called ACORN in a very very poor section of Chicago. That group and the Congressional Black Caucus pressured and intimidated banks to give mortages to people on welfare and other low income people who could not possibly afford the payments. ACORN people actually went into banks and caused a rackus if the bank president had denied mortages to any of the very very poor people of that area of Chicago. For 3 YEARS Pres. Bush warned congress that there would be a crisis but Rep. Barney Frank, (the homosexual) and the other Black Caucus members would not listen. They are all Democrats who started to cry racism and bias against poor people. Bush should have been more forceful but the public would have believed the racism claim because that is what the media would have reported. They would not have reported the loans being given to people who did not have the means to pay those mortages. Members of congress told the banks not to worry because Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would buy those mortages. Barney Frank had a boyfriend at Fannie Mac! It was Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that started the financial crisis. Then Fannie and Freddie would sell the mortages all around the world. That is why it became a global crisis. Mostly the large banks were targeted. Just a few out of the thousands of banks in the country but enough to cause a financial breakdown. Now the same people in congress that caused it are in charge of fixing it!! Christopher Dodd a Democrat senator from Connecticut got a Sweetheart deal (lower than the market rate) on a mortage from Country Wide and several Dems in the House of Rep. also got special deals from Fannie and Freddie. The husband of a black caucus member from Los Angeles whose name is Maxine Waters has a husband who is a board member of a bank that she has been working to get a BAILOUT (our HARD EARNED tax money) for! And it was his wife who pressured banks to give the no-good loans. Can you believe it? She DID NOT report it to the House Ethics Committe. This was reported on March 13th.
