Interesting that BO wants to be more tax unfriendly towards capital gains than even the Chinese. Communist Chinese are nicer towards their capitalists than we are towards ours in the US.
That explains why they are expanding and we're imploding.
Taxes are almost as big an enemy to our community as the AFSCME,
Even the Chinese are ahead of us on this. |

79359 - Thu Mar 5 11:14:23 2009 - [DFL dice game gone bad] By: Game Over |
Ironic how according to the DFL all of Duluth's woes belonged to Fedo, Doty, and Bergson, and nationally Bush was totally to blame for the demoralization of our country and it's economic woes! The Obama Community Planner-Senator from Illinois-President was straight line partisan involved in the "Making of America" for years just like his Area Campaign Manager-Councilor-Mayor Ness, was in the "Making of Duluth". Big surprise for both Obama and Ness as far as level of crisis!? Should not have been if they were using common sense of history and doing what they promised in campaigns and their work previously!!!!!!
A game of history repeated, socialistic suicide monopoly, enforced by a lobby of self centered big money, on a national and city levels, has been played and the working class backbone taxpayer never really had a chance to throw the dice. If they though they did, their turn was forfeited or ignored by political corruption and economic power. In Duluth a large part of the common sense backbone of population and tax revenue just left town knowing it was "NOT AS BAD" elsewhere. Nationally it really started with the lies about Vietnam and the corruption of the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidency. The winning prize of this suicide game of monopoly will be just what Duluth has become today, a low income, welfare dependent, slavery based, socialistic community which is full of unrest, and that pads the pockets of the few wealthy with cheap labor and high taxes from it's citizens.
Good players do not lie! Clinton either had sexual relations with that woman or he didn't! Obama either supports and promotes earmarks or he also outwardly lies and says he doesn't! No need to mention what Ness' blatant ignorance of the truth has helped bring Duluth!!!!
Who's turn is it? Anybody see where the dice went? Somebody better them put back on the table before terrible game history once again turns ugly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May God please bless our leaders with some common sense!!!!! That includes you too Roger!!!

A settlement between the city of Duluth and its largest labor union could see most laid-off full-time employees brought back to work, the News Tribune has learned.
Members of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees, Local 66, were told Tuesday night that the city will offer starting-level positions to union-covered employees laid off last year. Rehired workers would receive their full salaries for six months. After that, their salaries would be reduced to the starting-level position.

First wedlock, then lockup for bride in Duluth courtroom

By: Steve Kuchera, Duluth News Tribune
Shannah Dianne Miller wore orange when she married Matthew Warren Gothard in a St. Louis County District courtroom Tuesday in Duluth.
Not because it’s her favorite color — she’s being held in St. Louis County Jail, awaiting extradition to Arkansas on a charge of illegal use of credit cards.
“Now I can say I’ve seen it all,” Judge David M. Johnson said later. Johnson married the two after ordering Miller held without bail.
“I’ve never done a marriage like that,” he said.
The legal procedures began routinely enough, with Miller, 38, appearing before Johnson to waive her right to fight extradition.
After dealing with that issue, Johnson surprised a few people in the courtroom by confirming with Miller and Gothard, 35, that they wanted to tie the knot. Johnson left the bench and approached the bride — dressed in her orange jail jumpsuit and wearing wrist and ankle restraints — standing in the dock. Gothard came up to stand beside his bride, separated from her by a low railing. Courtroom security allowed the couple to hold hands and kiss at the end of the brief ceremony.
After a quick “I love you,” the bride was taken to the courthouse’s secure holding area.
“I wish we could have gotten married under better circumstances,” Gothard said later. “It’s not what we expected. No honeymoon.”
The couple met each other about a year ago.
“We hit if off right away,” Gothard said, adding they had been talking for a couple of months about getting married in a simple, civil ceremony.
Then Miller was arrested Saturday.
“The long arm of the law caught up with her because she had some unpaid fines in Arkansas,” Gothard said. “It was very shocking, disappointing. But it doesn’t change anything. I still love her.”
Miller is charged with three felony counts of misusing credit or debit cards, Van Buren (Ark.) County deputy prosecuting attorney Joe Winningham said, defrauding merchants of more than $700. Each count carries a potential sentence of three to 10 years in prison. Johnson ordered a review hearing on March 17 if officials from Arkansas haven’t extradited her by then.
With his beloved arrested and facing extradition, Gothard met Johnson Monday to see if the judge would marry them.
“He asked me and I said: ‘Sure, why not?’ ” Johnson said. “I was surprised, but it’s one of the things we do.”

79337 - Tue Mar 3 00:13:13 2009 - [The "tax card" for government spending] By: JBBP |
Hey Dead Inside...
I don't want to see an ocean of blood. But I do agree, people are getting pissed.
How did our fiscal/personal financial situations become so bad for so many of us? I think it's our own fault. Really.
Too many of us were lured by the idea that we can have things that we can't pay for. We used credit to get these things...credit cards, mortgages, remortgages, etc.
To my limited perspective, it seems that, when we procure things for ourselves with credit, we not only pay more because of interest, but the prices we pay rise artificially...perhaps because a loan doesn't seem like real money until you have to pay it back. What the heck- so what if a thing costs more than you have- you can just pay it back, right? Using credit to get stuff makes it easier to persuade yourself that you actually need/deserve whatever it is you put on credit.
Pretty soon, you find yourself so broke from paying on your credit debt that you don't have enough money for essentials...so people use credit for that, too. The debt becomes perpetual.
Seems to me, this is how government has used our tax coffers. They charge more to the "tax card"- we get to pay higher tax payments.
If I'm not mistaken, you can pay your local property taxes with a credit card, too. Wow. The banks are going...bankrupt. What will that mean for the government?
Thank you.

Legislative leaders are now planning to use testimony dominated by government employees as an excuse to raise your taxes. Closing the projected $7 billion deficit would require a tax increase of over $5,400 for the average family of four.
Don't sit idly by and allow them to perpetrate this fraud on Minnesota taxpayers. Let your voice be heard by participating in our "Virtual Listening Session." Our view: Let local leaders lop their paychecks
In early February, the Virginia City Council voted to take a 10 percent pay cut, only to discover that state law wouldn’t allow it. They did it anyway.
A Minnesota law blocking elected local leaders from slashing their own pay was called arcane last week.
Might we add insane? How about outrageous, even if it doesn’t rhyme?
In early February, the Virginia City Council voted to take a 10 percent pay cut, only to discover that state law wouldn’t allow it. The same statute preventing newly elected councilors from raising their salaries soon after taking office also, it turns out, prohibits decreases.
Virginia Mayor Steve Peterson instructed his staff to go ahead anyway and trim 10 percent from his $500 March paycheck and 10 percent from the $350 checks issued to city councilors.
The hoodlums. Lock ’em up. They saved $2,760 this year in the face of a $1 million loss in Local Government Aid from the state. And they set an admirable example.
But they’ll likely escape jail time. Rep. Marty Seifert, a Republican House leader, came to the rescue, vowing to introduce a bill offering amnesty to Peterson and his gang.
Not that anyone would have prosecuted them anyway. St. Louis County Attorney Melanie Ford said the violation was a misdemeanor, something her office would refer to a city attorney. Virginia City Attorney Thomas Butorac pleaded a conflict of interest.
The Virginia council issue apparently put to rest, Seifert — or any other member of the Minnesota Legislature — can go to work to abolish, remove, burn in a campfire or do whatever is necessary to rid the state of similar laws that block fiscal responsibility, not to mention common sense. Or better yet: How about new laws requiring pay cuts and other cost-saving measures when times are tough?
What the Virginia City Council did was anything but outrageous. Some might say courageous.
Dare we add contagious?

I’ve heard of a brick being thrown through a former council member’s home window, another having his house paintballed and someone having their dog shot dead. As things get worse and worse out there I wouldn’t be surprised to see a turnabout and anarchy and civil unrest against those that are seen responsible for personal losses of others. |

THIS IS A FINE EXAMPLE OF PROGRESSIVE LIBERALS LETTING CRIMINALS OUT TO COMMIT MORE CRIME.
http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/113660/
He pleaded guilty exactly a year earlier — Feb. 28 — to burglarizing homes in eastern Duluth, some while the owners were in the house. He told police then that he chose that part of the city to burglarize because “he knew people didn’t lock their houses out east.” He was sentenced to 24 months in prison and given credit for about 4½ months served. It was unclear Saturday why Robledo was free 12 months later.
He has appeared in St. Louis County Court in connection with four separate sets of charges since December 2006, according to Duluth News Tribune archives.

79300 - Sat Feb 28 16:58:23 2009 - [Burglary-Auto Theft ] By: Locals Gone Wild |
DATE: February 28, 2009
SUBJECT: Arrest-Burglary/theft suspect
CASE #: 09-230896
INCIDENT DATE: February 28, 2009
INCIDENT TIME: 2:05 a.m.
INCIDENT LOCATION: 700 Block Ridgewood Rd., Duluth
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Burglary-Auto Theft
BY: Lieutenant Jenkins
_______________________________________________________________________________
Description:
During the evening hours of February 27, 2009, Duluth Police investigated a simple gas theft from the Holiday Station on 27th Ave. West. Store employees provided police a description of the vehicle and the lone occupant, who fled northbound on Interstate 35 prior to officers arriving. A registration number for the vehicle was also provided. Through their investigation, police determined the suspect vehicle to be an "unreported" stolen from the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The vehicle was not immediately located.
At approximately 2:00 a.m. on February 28, 2009, a Duluth Police Officer spotted the stolen Black 2000 Audi near the intersection of Lake Avenue and Superior Street. The officer stopped the vehicle as it neared the on-ramp to I35 North and while the officer attempted to apprehend the suspect, he drove away from the officer, collided with the guardrail while entering the on-ramp to northbound I35, shut off the vehicle's lights and sped away and eluded the officer.
Officers continued to search for the vehicle, eventually locating it abandoned in the yard of a residence in the area of 36th Avenue East and Old Howard Mill Rd. The suspect had apparently fled on foot. Shortly afterward, the suspect began calling the 9-1-1 center from a cellular phone and taunted that he was "smarter than the police" and would not be captured. The suspect apparently was unaware of the tenacity of the police officers involved as they braved fridged temperatures tracking the suspect in the snow, on-foot and with a police dog.
At around 4:30 a.m., a homeowner in the 700 block of Ridgewood Road called 9-1-1 reporting a prowler, dressed in dark clothing, who had been observed to enter their garage, all while the police were closing in on their auto theft suspect nearby. Within a few minutes, police located their suspect hiding in a shed in a yard on Ridgewood Road. The suspect resisted police efforts to take him into custody and physically assaulted two of the officers involved. Neither sustained significant injury.
The suspect, identified as ANOTONIO THOMAS ROBLEDO, dob/100785 of Duluth, was transported to the St Louis County Jail and booked on charges of gas theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, burglary, tampering with a motor vehicle, trespassing and assaulting a police officer. |

79298 - Sat Feb 28 11:41:23 2009 - [Quantum Wrongness from DFL Duluth to DC] By: Mike P |
I came across this commentary:
http://www.strike-the-root.com/91/allport/allport3.html
Here are some excerpts:
...Today, the public is predictably being lured ever-deeper into Wrongness by propaganda about the economic crisis. Among other things, we are told that adding trillions of dollars in new federal debt and printing oceans of new money-from-thin-air will somehow restore prosperity.
Given that such behavior was the primary cause of the crisis, it would seem obvious that more of the same will not solve the problem. Debt doesn't create prosperity, but heavy debt can certainly vaporize prosperity, and the bailouts have so far added $27,599 in government debt for every U.S. citizen – $110,396 per family of four. (Yes, that's just new debt). Printing money non-stop doesn't create prosperity either, as anyone in Zimbabwe can testify , but the human ability to passionately believe in Things That Are Wrong is apparently stronger than reality itself.
Why is Counterfeiting Illegal?
If printing up trillions of dollars to "stimulate spending" is going to save the economy, why do we ever put up with even the slightest recession? Just print that funky money, boys and girls! Give every citizen a high-speed color laser printer and require everyone to download the Official Dollar Jpeg Files and then print, print, PRINT those dollars nonstop, day and night! Every man, woman, and child would be a multi-billionaire, and economic activity would be red-hot forever!
Why stop at ten giant-screen TVs when you can have twenty? Heck, why not panel every wall in your mansion floor-to-ceiling with big-screen LCDs? You couldn't get them all home in your new Ferrari, but you could easily buy a fleet of vans for the job – and hire drivers for them, too. You could buy ANYTHING YOU WANTED, every day of the year!
See what I mean? How could the economic crisis withstand that? Problem solved! – at least if we believe the rationale for America 's current response to the financial crisis.
For some reason, we aren't handing the zillions of new dollars we are creating to just anyone. No, Our Leaders know what's best (despite their constant failure in the past) and they have decided to be picky, and to hand most (although not all) of those galactic-sized piles of your money to failed bankers (only some of whom may be guilty of teensy amounts of mortgage fraud), to failed automakers and other failed big-business honchos, to federal bureaucrats and heads of police-state agencies, and to other more-important-than-you über-humans who will spend the money better than you would. (Our Maximum Leader also knows how to spin this better than I do "or see here , making it sound positively sensible). Like crumbs trickling down from a banquet table to the mice and roaches below, some of this trillion-dollar largess will float down to the Little People, and then Americans can be happy and rich and smug once again, as we have every right to be. America ! Hell yeah!
But somewhere, in a dark and anxious corner of our minds, we know the truth: hard work and savings are needed to create and sustain prosperity. Constantly going into debt to spend more money than you actually have while closing down productive industries and shipping the work overseas – living like parasites on the savings and labor of other nations – is a sure-fire way to turn a prosperous nation into a poor one. Printing mountains of money from thin air doesn't work either, since each new dollar-from-nothing reduces the value of every existing dollar – exactly why counterfeiting is illegal...

Reader's view: Obama leading nation toward socialism
I remember people screaming when tracking devices started being put into cars. They complained their privacy was being taken away, that the federal government was taking too much of our freedoms.
So what did Americans do? They voted for a president who not only is taking freedoms but leading the nation toward socialism.
President Obama seems to want to take over banks. He’d know how much money we have, how much we spend, how many credit cards we have and whether we’re rich or poor.
He seems to want to socialize medicine. We’d have to see only the doctors the government would want us to see, no matter what condition we’re in and no matter what we need to live. And if we’re just too old, we’ll be allowed to die.
The U.S. should have learned lessons from Europe.
I know one person who has been waiting for a new hip for more than two years. I know someone else who had pneumonia and needed medicine but had to wait four months to see a doctor. Is that what we want?
Rep. Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Party ruined the housing industry with the Fair Housing Act. She forced banks to loan money to people who could not afford anything. The loans were made. Foreclosures followed.
Since the Democrats have been in for two years, our country has gone to hell. Look at the stock market.
And don’t blame President Bush. He got the problems from President Clinton. Bush had unemployment down to 3 percent. Look it up!

All they can do is spout hippie left wing propaganda. If the destruction of America and capitalism is Obama's plan, he is doing a great job. Is that your idea Claire? Destroy America? Wow, Claire- you poor thing! I must really have hit a sore spot with you.
Just for the record...it's not actually me who calls myself a writer. I just like to write, and sometimes I do, so I guess there are times when I am a writer. I've played around with it some, but not very seriously. I don't have alot of time for such an indulgence, although there are quite a few people who have told me I should pursue writing as a career. Since I don't have a whole lot of confidence, most of what I do is for fun, or in the case of this blog, to express an opinion.
"Begging to be published"...hmm. I haven't yet had to resort to such a thing. I'd be more inclined to tell a publisher to kiss my ass, because that sounds like fun. But I wonder, Claire, when I ever do get around to writing something I think I'd like to try and market, how about you recommend a good vanity publisher? I'm almost certain you've presented lots of them with material...other than blogsites and such, that's probably your best chance.
Big Iron, you've been posting some great stuff lately...I'd take you up on a match with Claire, but I'd likely have to miss work. So hi-ho, hi-ho...it's off to work I go.
Thank you. |

MODERATOR: Claire, although threats are part of the Duluth DFL tactics commonly used on anyone who chooses to not drink the Kool Aid, it still is not very "Minnesota Nice" to make such threats. It isn't very Progressive at all. Shame on you. |

MY ANSWER TO HER:
Hello No, I agree! You're right about how bad things have gotten since the DEMS took control of the Congress in 2006. Look at the stock market in the past two years. Look at the economy and how it’s come to a screeching halt under the DEMS. Look at the DEMS telling lenders they had to borrow to people who are higher risk borrowers which led to the mortgage crisis. Too bad the DEMS have forgotten that Americans have the right to pursue happiness, NOT a house and NOT a free lunch. Whine all you want about the last 8 years, but what the DEMS are doing to the country is catastrophic as they look to control more dumbed down Americans with more handouts. First there was Castro, then Chavez and now the DEMS. They all will or have run out of money and the new DEMS are blowing GW’s deficit spending record out of the water. GW’s deficit in eight years will be blown away by the DEMS in just two years! Now that’s what I call CHANGE! |

| Obama is doing to the United States what Reagan did to the Soviet Union. Someone should tell Barry that the U.S. is not the enemy and that the idea is to defeat ones enemy, not ones own country and people. On the bright side of things, 2010 should be an opportunity for many years of fiscal responsibility to come if Obama does not bankrupt the country before then. |

I would be too, if I claimed I was a writer, but couldn't get published anywhere except on DCB, even if I *gave* my work away, *begged* people to publish my work, and didn't bother to inform myself as to my rights as a writer.

| Barb J, about a year ago Stahl wrote the story on who commits crime in Duluth. He used a driver's license with a DULUTH ADDRESS as the ONLY determining factor from inmates in the St. Louis Co. jail. I knew that was complete bull so I went to the Sheriff's Office and got the same info Stahl did. The info that Stahl used was previously highlighted. However, there were dozens of other inmates who's LAST PREVIOUS address from Mpls, St. Paul, Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, Mississippi, Douglas Co. and even I. Falls, was not highlighted. I asked a Sheriff why the reporter didn't include these people. He told me "the reporter didn't want that information". Personal or DNT agenda? Lies? Call it what you want. |

Mons Veneris you and your fellow DCBers are such losers. Today, the DCB faithful are making fun of the fact that the DNT is receiving state grant money. This criticism comes from a website that violates copyright law almost everyday by posting ENTIRE news articles to their message board. If they would just post an active link (which they can't do) the millions of people who visit the DCB every second would be sent to the DNT website if they were interested in reading the entire DNT news article.
If the DCB numbers, 1.1 million hits, are true (they are not) they are stealing potential revenue from the DNT.

Pioneer Press, News Tribune get grant money to retrain staffs
Associated Press
Updated: 02/24/2009 09:43:15 PM CST
DULUTH, Minn. — Two Minnesota newspapers will share in $238,000 in state grant money to help retrain their staffs to adapt to an increasingly Internet-based industry.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press and the Duluth News Tribune will work with the University of Minnesota's School of Journalism and Mass Communication on the project. The three will contribute about $469,000 to the effort, mostly by devoting staff time to training.
The state money comes from the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership. Paul Moe, the program's director, says newspapers around the country are looking closely at the project as a potential model.
The newspapers and the journalism school will begin working on what should be studied. People involved in the project say it's likely to be a mix of learning new computer programs to help sell ads and tell news stories, and fundamentally rethinking how to deliver news and ads.

Coleman campaign challenges St. Louis County ballots
Attorneys say 300 absentee ballots from St. Louis County were counted on election night but they would be illegal under a recent decision by recount trial judges.
By: Scott Wente, Duluth News Tribune
Ben Ginsberg, an attorney for Norm Coleman, shows reporters an enlarged copy of a blank absentee ballot envelope from St. Louis County. Ginsberg said the county counted the ballot inside the envelope in the Nov. 4 election even though the envelope was not completed according to state law. The campaign said there are at least 300 St. Louis County votes in the Senate election tally that would be considered illegal under recent rulings by the three judges overseeing the election trial.
ST. PAUL — Attorneys for Sen. Norm Coleman’s re-election campaign say they have identified 300 absentee ballots from St. Louis County that were counted on election night but that would be illegal under a recent decision by recount trial judges.
Those “illegal” ballots represent more votes than the 225 that separated Democrat Al Franken from Republican Coleman after the recount, said Coleman’s attorney Ben Ginsberg.
The Coleman campaign gave reporters copies of the St. Louis County absentee ballot documents outside the courtroom this evening. It was an attempt to illustrate an issue the Coleman campaign has tried to raise for the past week — that the court should reconsider its ruling excluding some types of uncounted ballots from the trial — but that the judges so far have rejected.
There are similar problems in counties around the state, Ginsberg said, but the campaign highlighted St. Louis County because it expects Franken’s campaign to call a St. Louis County election official to testify in the trial.
St. Louis County voters favored Franken in the election by a 55 percent to 32 percent margin; 12 percent voted for Dean Barkley.
Ginsberg said the 300 ballots contained problems including missing voter and witness signatures and address discrepancies. One envelope had no voter information, but the ballot inside still was counted, the campaign said.
Ginsberg repeated his key argument from the past week that the court’s decision to exclude some absentee ballots from consideration in the trial is problematic because similar ballots were counted in the election.
“The court has the responsibility to reconcile the issues,” he said. |

The DNT will not report the truth as this would undermine their agenda of deceiving the public. It reminds me of an interview done in 1992 when the former Soviet Union fell. An old lady, who was carrying water in buckets on each end of a stick across her back was asked why people never fought against the system. She said it was because they were always told that they had the best living conditions in the world and that the Soviet Union was the envy of the world. The DNT is the Pravda of Northeastern Minnesota. It is an instrument of DFL Duluth which is used to attack anyone who questions the DFL and it is used daily for doling out the propaganda of the DFL party to the unknowing general public who think that they are the envy of the world.
Too bad for the Soviets that Al Gore wasn't living in 1918 or his invention of the internet may have allowed people to hear the real truth and thus avoid 70 years of Socialist hell. |

Kudos to an excellent truthful letter to the editor in the LIB. It is nice to see others than DCBers with the courage to call a spade a spade.
DFL Duluth is a labor town and it is ironic that the union run LIB is going downhill just like the rest of DFL Duluth.
The DFL labor mindset or mindless, do not get it and is leaving the current and shrinking future generations of this city in irrevocable financial situation. The labor mindless-set is the number one reason that DFL Duluth has missed out on so many economic opportunities of the past 30 years.
Look around DFL labor town! St. Cloud, Rochester, Mankato, Grand Forks, Fargo-Moorhead, Bismarck and more have all seen much greater economic prosperity and have less in the form of environmental assets to enjoy.
DFL Duluth’s labor attitude, “our way or the highway” is a major reason you need to go green and read the union dominated LIB online for free, saving money, energy and the trees.

Reader's view: Labor-city decisions result in skyrocketing costs
I read with great interest the News Tribune’s Feb. 9 editorial about the plan to hire a labor negotiator for the city of Duluth (Our View: “Duluth can tap expert to negotiate ‘modern’ contracts”).
With a background including eight years on the City Council, and as a former labor negotiator for the County Board, I hasten to offer a reminder that a labor negotiator is just a messenger. He or she can only bring proposals of the employer to the table and carry proposals from the union to the mayor, council or county board.
In my day, the mayor, or his appointee, did the bargaining. When he had a deal, it was brought to the City Council for approval. While the negotiations were going on, we councilors tried to keep a tight hold on a mayor who was “labor-oriented.”
Duluth and St. Louis County tend to be labor-oriented, so an elected official who is planning to run for re-election must be very careful not to offend AFSCME. It could hurt.
We now see the result of city-labor decisions to grant liberal benefits have snowballed. Medical and hospital costs have skyrocketed, and asking the unions and retirees to accept a reduction in benefits is not going to work. No matter how talented your negotiator is, the unions will not give up those benefits. We might as well ask the doctors and hospitals to lower their charges. They caused the problem.

That so called "watch" site has no agenda, they just want to eliminate dissent in Duluth. There's really no purpose to their comments because they are all written by one sad person. They've just become a place where unhappy and angry "progessive" women and their DELETED whipped spouses (assuming they are interested in people of the opposite sex) go to complain about whatever's on their elitist minds. The "watch" site (unlike the DCB, with close to 1,000,000 hits) is dying a long, slow, agonizing death -- but very few people are witnessing it, because no one but a few fringe progressives believe in it. The "watch" has absolutely no impact in Duluth. Their sad song has finally ended.
TONYR: Mons, you are 110% on the mark. Since March 1, 2008, the DCB has had 1,101,968 hits. YES OVER ONE MILLION HITS IN LESS THAN ONE YEAR. 79240 - Tue Feb 24 18:14:35 2009 - [Gardner wants to keep power in AFSCME] By: Web Hound Jr. |
http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/pages/buzz
Why Gardner voted down the mayor's charter change
If you blinked during last night's city council meeting, you missed it: the mayor's proposal to change the charter to allow him to appoint two members to his staff went down by one vote. There was no discussion before councilor Sharla Gardner cast the lone vote against it -- a charter change needs approval by all nine members of the council.
The mayor looked a bit, well, surprised, before the council moved on to the next ordinance. There was a bit of discussion on the ordinance during Thursday's agenda session, but most of that came from Gary Eckenberg who wanted to know what these two people would be doing for the mayor (one would basically be a spokesperson/p.r. person for the mayor, the other would do outreach/coordination with community groups, task forces and help the mayor resolve issues for constituents).
I asked Gardner why she voted against the mayor's ordinance, and she said she felt as if it would have "undermined the civil service system."
"There's a reason it exists and it's because of the former spoil system," she said. "Which has been a big problem in forms of local government in the past.... I didn't think it was progressive to do. I felt it was regressive."
She said she felt the mayor could still make those hires while working with the civil service system, but the mayor, in his arguments to appoint those spots, said he wanted someone whom he could trust.
"I can tell you that it is absolutely vital to have people in your inner circle you can trust and that you work well with," he told the charter commission when it was voting on whether to approve the change. "If there is a situation in which the mayor holds the position that is counter to the union and who are no longer union members, there is a potential for personnel conflict and in those situations as well."
Gardner, however, felt it would have given the mayor more power.
"I think the mayor has quite a lot of power and I don't think he needs anymore. I think he needs checks and balances," she said.

HOW LONG UNTIL ONE OF THOSE RELEASED ATTACK THE USA AGAIN?
Obama Releases Al-Qaeda Terrorist
A mere 24 hours ago, Guantanamo Bay detainee Binyam Mohamed landed in England at 8:30 EST - a free man. Mohamed was captured in Pakistan in April, 2002, and has admitted to training at various Al-Qaeda training camps and is alleged to have plotted multiple attacks on American soil.
Included in his laundry list of terrorist activities are:
Training at various Al-Qaeda training camps, where he specialized in firearms and explosives
Being taught by senior Al-Qaeda leaders how to falsify documents
Receiving money by Al-Qaeda leaders to travel to the United States
Tasked by senior Al-Qaeda leaders to blow up high-rise apartment buildings in the United States
Holding meetings with Saif al Adel (a top level al Qaeda planner and leader) and Khalid Sheik Mohammed (9/11 mastermind)
This unprecedented release puts the national security of our country and our allies at SERIOUS risk. Now that Binyam is back in England, British police have proclaimed the unfathomable – that it is “unlikely Mr. Mohamed would be arrested.”

Greater taxes for business and the wealthy? The wealthy do not pay greater taxes, they just raise consumer prices, in turn, the small businesses that could turn this crisis around will continue to be fiscally bound and down! The small business that uses stimulus money and tax credits will find themselves, like some Clinton years back found ranchers in Jordan, Montana, having the carpet pulled out from underneath them by the wealthy "lobby" trash that the "Chosen One" works for! Council votes down proposed changes to city charter
By: Brandon Stahl , Duluth News Tribune
The Duluth City Council voted against two ordinances that would have changed the city charter.
One would have made it easier for city employees to run for elected office.
The city attorney’s office recommended that council pass the ordinance, saying that the current ordinance didn’t comply with state law. However, some councilors felt conflicts of interest could arise from city employees being elected to city office.
The other would have allowed the mayor to appoint two members of his staff rather than hire through the civil service process.
Only Sharla Gardner voted against the mayor’s ordinance, but a charter change requires a 9 to 0 vote; the employee ordinance was opposed by Todd Fedora, Jay Fosle and Garry Krause.

The city said it wanted the outside help to free up time for its own attorneys to work on other matters. Mayor Don Ness said he believed the $50,000 cap on the attorney was “reasonable” and didn’t seem to expect to spend more. The city begins negotiating with its unions later this year.
Councilors Sharla Gardner and Jim Stauber voted no, with both believing costs will go well above $50,000 and saying it sets bad precedent in the future. “I look at this 50k and we could have funded a human rights investigator, we still have branch libraries closed, we’re still not funding recreation specialists, and those to me are priorities,” Gardner said.

But if Tony wasn't on the "payroll", there wouldn't be a conflict would there. Word is things ain't going well in Zeppaville. |

| Guess who's about to be honored AGAIN!? Yep, the Chairman of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee...Jim Blowhard Oberstar! A Minnesota Wild Game Dinner at only $500 plate. How many times a year does this guy's ego need stroking? Doesn't he have something to do with them building a one-mile long bike path in downtown Mpls. for the cost of $9.2 MILLION?? I don't know about you, but I can think of a few other things more important than that to use that much money for. Yep, for a guy that says "working for you.....working for Minnesota", he sure works hard to take us all to the cleaners. |

79220 - Mon Feb 23 17:27:35 2009 - [Another Duluth native gone bad?] By: hasbeen |
THIS TEAM SHOULD JUST SHUT DOWN
A 22-year-old Ohio man who played amateur football for the Duluth-Superior Shoremen was arrested Thursday in Duluth on charges of sexually assaulting two girls over a five-year period in Ohio, according to a spokesman with the Cleveland Police Department.
Kevin Gregory Jr. was wanted on 19 counts of rape and 18 counts of kidnapping for incidents that began in 2003, according to court documents from Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Gregory and an accomplice were identified through information obtained in June by the Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services. A warrant for Gregory’s arrest was issued Jan. 21.
The ages of the two girls at the time of the assaults is estimated at 9 to 16, according to Lt. Thomas Stacho of the Cleveland Police Department.
Gregory, who previously attended Hibbing Community College, was arrested Thursday afternoon without incident after the Duluth Police Department acted on a tip from the Cleveland Police Department, according to Duluth police. Gregory had previously provided Cuyahoga County with an address in Charlotte, N.C.
Gregory was the starting quarterback for the Shoremen and was planning on being a team captain this summer.
If convicted, Gregory faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for each count, said Ryan Miday of the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.
“He sure seemed to be a good guy, quiet, no problems,” said John Orstad, an official with the Shoremen.
The Shoremen don’t conduct background checks on their players, said George Booth, team president.
“This is the first incident in five years where a player comes up with a red flag,” Booth said. |

| Maybe I will rephrase the question. Will the Messiah bring the market to the 6000s by tomorrow? LOL! Good job today Barry, 250 points in the crapper. Go barry! Almost there. Now this is "Real Change" and I think that we can all believe in it too. Even the dumbass left has to see it at some point. Those DFL trust funds have to be showing a few cracks by now. And the governmment employees might want to start paying attention to the happenings under Messiah control. Si se puede!!! Lets just nationalize everything and the rest of the people can be on welfare like the government employees and the other welfareites. |

| Doom and Gloom? or is the worm of city politics about to change? Mark Winson coming back is your first look at more of the same. What does it say about the Admin/Council and Unions all stepping in to say we can work with this guy, he's great?Free Health Care was his baby at the negotiating table. Not the original proposal( that was FEDO )but the continuation of the original.I was thinking about investing in the market again, maybe I should buy a councilor or work for the city union (same thing) and I would be able to retire sooner. |

79211 - Sun Feb 22 11:44:07 2009 - [Can Cuneo say Conflict of Interest?] By: Liz A |
Thanks for the heads up regarding the “Duluth stimulus package.” This resolution goes before the council Monday night. One has to wonder why the boy wonder reporter Stahl didn’t find this something to inform the public about.
It’s unfortunate that Cynic and Joe M. find it necessary to immediately get bogged down regarding the assessor’s office. Seems to me folks should be far more concerned about the fact that the city is stepping to the plate to bail this mess out. As for the property under discussion one has to wonder exactly what qualified this couple to purchase there. For all we know they may have purchased a Land Trust home.
When the market was going to close, the Hillside Business Association pulled together a hair brain scheme to fund keeping it open. They hand selected a couple (am speculating these people had no experience but fell into the politically correct boxes i.e. low income, non local, and the right color). The HBA purchased the building and then pulled together a financial package created in OZ.
Take some time to listen to the issue during the agenda session last Thursday. This woman doesn’t sound like she has a clue what’s going on. Even more interesting is the fact that the HBA has now bowed out of the deal and the building is now owned by the Zuppa Foundation so they serve as the markets landlord. Let’s see if Cuneo can say conflict of interest Monday night.

79210 - Sun Feb 22 09:08:34 2009 - [Artificial home value backed city loan] By: Cynic |
| Joe M., Here is something you can do. Call the assessors office and ask if the home in question was assessed at 310k in June of 2006. While talking with them find out what the home was assessed at prior to the recent sale....say for 2007, 2008 and 2009. At least that would clear up part of my hmmmmmm. What was the exact sale price? How about the city get back into supplying some basic services rather than loans for grocery store inventories backed up by inflated artificial home values. |

Barb J.:
Whtats up babe? Are you delusional today? How are the meds doing? I was talking about New Orleans, not DFL Duluth. What does Halliburton/Chaeny/N.O. have to do with Duluth??
I am just as pissed at the DFL up here as the past administration out in DC. It so nice to see W. gets a free pass in here. Maybe you should look at Ron Paul and see what a real politician is all about.
So Barb, what does Katrina have to do with Duluth?
MODERATOR: Gen. Grant, New Orleans has nothing to do with Duluth other than both places are way corrupted by money grubbing Dumbacrats. Steal and spin is the name of their game. Line their pockets and fleece anyone and anything in their path. They are the real hurricane, not Katrina. |

79204 - Sat Feb 21 15:09:25 2009 - ["Watch" Dead In The Water] By: mons veneris |
| As far as I'm concerned, the "watch" site is dead in the water. Nobody takes it seriously, I mean nobody, not even the women at the cafe. Unlike Duluth Citizens Blog, there are no movers & shakers associated with the "watch" site, just an angry feminist and her enabling spouse who feel entitled to more than they deserve in life. Spewing hate, lies, and perverse values. So sad, maybe they should get out of the house more often, get some fresh air, do something productive for our community, maybe volunteer, engage in civic activities perhaps. |

Does the assessors office list the value for a corner in mom's basement? I'm sure the moderators would be interested in that figure to see if she's charging too much rent.
