Looks to me like an opinion from the moderator. I know I know, I am welcomed to not visit this site. Instead of always revealing the truth in Duluth?" Many Duluthians will not be able to handle the truth once they understand how badly they have been getting hosed. Thank you.

If you haven't noticed, the city is broke and taxing the people more is coming to and end too as more people keep voting with their feet and move. This blog finally published one of my posts. The previous four submissions were not published. "Exercising Free Speech" indeed. But when my post is published the moderator credits it to Claire K. I am the man of the house, not her. What is up with that? With only a few exceptions, this blog is a wonderful venue for exposing leftist DFL nonsense and corruption. But I continue to visit, hoping to see some real dialogue instead of ignorant vitriol(a word I learned from reading this blog). How about this goofy idea? Maybe the moderator could present an issue, local or national, and the bloggers could actually try to present constructive ideas. It wouldn't be as much fun as ripping on people from the left just because they are demented, it would actually require some real thought, something that is not frequently evident on this blog. But I would also like to have hair like Fabio. Thank you.

STARFIRE: Joel S, this blog is all about exercising free speech. You sound like you want to participate, yet you don't seem to have the nads to even post your name. Why? No hair on your nads or what? If it took looking at this blog and then looking up the definition of "vitriol" to know what it is, you may want to stick with the usual DFL 101. That's where you say "yes" whenever one of the DFL Politburo members suggests something and then tells you which candidate to vote for. DCB is more for those who are "open minded" and interested in open dialogue. FYI, if you use the "F" word for every word you won't get posted again. Take it for what its worth. On protests and arrests

So, apparently, according to some radio folks, a former city councilor, and the collected local right-wing blogosphere, I am a DFL honk who's been ignoring the arrest of Beth Olson, who's running for the At Large council seat and was the lead vote-getter in the primaries. So let's address it:

She and five others were arrested during President George Bush's visit to Duluth in 2004 on charges of disorderly conduct for trying to get into the DECC, a charge that was dropped because then city attorney Bryan Brown said she should have been charged with trespassing. (story below)

I was actually going to write about this and allow her to address the arrest for a profile on each city council candidate for the paper to run next month. But because the issue seems to be exploding lately, I called her and let her know that I wanted to write about it now. She didn't back away from it, immediately owning up.

"It's public information that I've been active with civil disobedience," she said.

What happened?

"It was an arrest on civil disobedience," she said. "Just in the fashion that Martin Luther King or Gandhi have used civil disobedience to get their points across in a way to understand a position."

And what was she protesting?

"George Bush's stance on recognizing relationships for GLBT people," she said.

There's also rumor floating out there that she was arrested last year while Superior Mayor David Ross was doing a christmas tree lighting ceremony. Not true, she said. She was part of a march/rally for UW Superior, which was part of a national rally for gay rights. But she said she was not arrested, and never was the protest a disruption to the ceremony. Apparently, according to Olson, the tree-lighting ceremony just happened to coincide with the protest at the same location, but Ross was not the target of the rally.

I later spoke to Ross, who said he felt he was the target of the rally (which was actually in 2007), saying it was a small group of people who were protesting his position on not recognizing the Duluth/Superior Pride Fest. But, he said, they were not disruptive. "They were exercising their right to assemble," he said. "They were in their right place."

I asked if they were shouting derogatory at him. His response:

"I was being referred to as homophobic. That's not true. They were unhappy with what I've stated that I believe marriage is male and female and families are moms and dads and that is a position I hold."

At any rate, back to Olson: I asked her why she was involved in that protest, and she said it was because of her wanting recognition of GLBT relationships, and again she brought up MLK and Gandhi and that she was "following in the lines of peacemakers."

And then she said she didn't want to say more on the topic, I said ok, and we hung up.

I wrote up this blog post, realized that because this is a sensitive topic that I should read her quotes back to her and the context of the quotes (and yes, I do this for a lot of sources) and make sure I got everything right.

I also realized I should have asked: why was she involved in protests on these specific issues?

Her response: "I believe that everybody deserves to be equal and live in a society where there is fairness."

I agree with you, nobody wants to live in Duluth, that is not the fault of city emnployees, that is the fault of administration. A lot of us feel we serve the residents of the city, but we are being told we need to concentrate on getting the most work done in the shortest amount of time. Some of us feel we should be working for the citizens, but lately the administration does not think so.So we are being given time limits for how much time we can spent with each individual citizen. I grew up with a view that when you enter civil service, it means you work for the citizens, the administration seems not to believe that.

STARFIRE: bigfoot, right on. When I look at the salaries of the AFSCME honchos, I see exactly where the problems are. This is indeed not the employees fault. Duluth has excellent employees for the most part. But when Lehto is at $102,000, Leffler Kemp at $80,000, and even that idiot Laurie Johnson makes $80,000 the thieves surface. She would be lucky to earn a penny over minimum wage in the real world.

DFL Duluth is overpriced. From gas for your auto, to the taxes on wine & dining, to property taxes, a wide array of fees and fines to natural gas utility that’s twice the cost of St. Cloud, MN. Supply and demand works and working people are moving out of DFL Duluth because of AFSCME and the DFDPAC’s politics. Heck I would venture a guess that 33% on the city’s employees live outside of DFL Duluth as when you add it all up, the price tag and or crime of DFL Duluth is too much for even them.

Regarding this farce known as Beth Olson, it is really sad that she has not come clean to the voters. I actually kind of find her kind of hot, but if she is currently playing for the other squad, it appears she is out of luck. I would like to know if she is married to another gal and if so, why is she unwilling to admit it. If not, I think she should put out an alert on her website when she is back on the other team and if she is lucky, I may be interested.

Region's housing market stumbles

Realtors were at a loss to explain the dip in home sales and median sale prices from July to August.

From July to August, sales dropped 20 percent — from 229 to 183, according to the Duluth Area Association of Realtors.

Last year, sales between those months dipped 6 percent, from 221 to 207.

The month’s median selling price also slipped about 5 percent compared to July and 13 percent compared to August 2008. The price was $130,000 last month, down from $137,200 in July and $149,000 in August 2008.

This stat caught the eye of Pat Johnson, president of the Duluth Area Association of Realtors and a broker for Focus Real Estate group.

“In this economy, is anything startling? Probably not,” Johnson said. “But I haven’t seen a reason for it "the median price
to go down.”

Signifying a return of the area’s real estate market, the median selling price had trended upward by about $25,000 during four straight months from April to July. Last year, the median selling price was above $142,000 in the summer and fall before plummeting to $127,900 in December.

“I wouldn’t call it startling, but it was a bit of a surprise,” Johnson said of the decline. “I looked at the graph and saw the sale price was down a bit, and we had been going up for so long.”

Johnson pointed to the high number of pending sales in August as an indicator that the current real estate market is cyclical, not declining.

“I’m thinking September will be a higher sales month,” Johnson said of the 2009 high of 224 pending sales in August — up from 187 in July. Realtors also expect a bump by Nov. 30, when the first-time homebuyer tax credit expires.

“I think we will see strong sales now for a little bit,” she said.

The Duluth News Tribune craploid has sunk to a new low. I recieved an illegal telemarketing call today trying to sell me their craploid. The call was made to my unlisted cell phone.

It is illegal to telemarket to cell phones. The only way the DNT would have my phone number is through me writing letters to the editor. They require a number so they can verify the letter is authentic. They must compile these numbers and give or sell them to telemarketing companies.

The company the DNT hired to sell thier craploid is IMPACT SALES SOLUTIONS in Holland, Ohio. The number that called ne was 866-239-9352. There are many complaints about this company listed on the Internet.

If you get a call from them, make sure to tell them to add you their Do Not Call List.

If the craploid really wants to sell newspapers, they should try getting real unbiased reporters. They need stop the lazy reporting of one-sided news releases and start sniffing out stories. Look at the paper from 50 years ago. It was loaded with local stories, not just AP stories and press releases.

These people are the vanguard of a new societal evolution which has been spawned by the radical feminist movement. These women are greatly conflicted. They have been conditioned by years of feminist propaganda to despise men, despise masculinity, mock the role of fathers, disparage men and to live "independently" without a man. Nevertheless, despite years of indoctrination, womens studies seminars, university studies etc... these women still have biological urges and feminine desires which are ingrained through millennia of human evolution. These women desire children. And to have a child a woman requires a sperm donor. These women require and need a MAN. Either directly or indirectly (naturally or via medical procedure) they require sperm insemination. This is a dilemma which creates an untenable conflict for feminists. A loathing, hatred, rejection of men and the diametric need for a man or men to fulfill their biological needs and desires. This conflict is the source of great cognitive dissonance for lesbian women. This dissonance can manifest itself in many ways. In drug use, interpersonal violence (lesbian partnerships can be abusive, either one or both partners), alienation from "mainstream" society, acquisition of "masculine" traits, hostility towards others, and various anti-social behavioral patterns. This anti-social behavior can be expressed via radical political activism or political protest against those whom they perceive as aggravating their cognitive dissonance (i.e. those who reject the "normalcy" of "alternative" lifestyles). The end result is that they are bitter miserable people who have contempt and loathing for those who are comfortable with their own heterosexual identities.

Duluth, MN - At the request of city prosecutors, Judge Gerald E. Maher today dismissed charges against three activists who were arrested during George Bush's July visit to Duluth.

Angie Nichols, 33, and ELIZABETH OLSON, 34, both of Superior, were cited for disorderly conduct on July 13, after attempting to enter the Bush campaign rally at the Duluth Entertainment and COnvention Center. They had hoped to begin a dialogue with rally-goers and campaign workers on marriage rights for gay and lesbian people, rights which George Bush opposes. Michael Larson, 22, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after interrupting Bush's
campaign speech to protest what he views as an "illegal, unwise and unjust" invasion of Iraq.

This was the second case in which charges were dismissed against activists arrested during George Bush's July campaign appearance. In September, two homeless advocates who had attempted to block the presidential motorcade saw their misdemeanor charges of obstruction dismissed by Sixth District Court Judge David P. Sullivan.

"Hussein can lie and get away with it because everyone knows he will play the race card if you disagree with him. Wilson points out the lie and openly disagrees with Hussein and look how he is treated. We definitely appear to be headed toward a "Hitler-esque" Dictatorship."

I mean, I don't like the crazy policies Obama's proposing either, but all debates aside, people like this make me and you look bad. You can't cry foul when the DFLers play the race card and then play into their trap in the same sentence. Grant was clearly playing the race card and the DFLers in Duluth will tear him up for it. They'll act like this validates Pelosi's whining. I swear, this guy makes conservatives look bad in the same way Michael Moore hurts the DFLers. Let's boot these people out and stick to the facts. On Sunday, we met Action Wisconsin board members, Angie Nichols and BETH OLSON, before the training. Bob Jansen, the owner of The Main Club, one of Superior’s two gay bars, and John Ludwig, a father of a lesbian daughter, joined us. Bob opened the bar in 1983 and has long been a vocal and brave voice for gay visibility in Duluth-Superior. The Main Club might be the oldest gay bar in the state. We visited it later that night, and it’s clear that Bob has made it not just a place for people to drink--but also a community. Everyone seems to be welcomed into the bar, and there are bulletin boards with community event listings and clippings from area newspaper coverage of LGBT issues.

Angie and BETH GOT MARRIED LAST YEAR IN CANADA. They speak eloquently about what it felt like to travel just a few hours north and have a marriage that is not only legally, but also socially, acknowledged. A Canadian woman congratulated them, but then asked why they traveled to Canada to get married. The woman was incredulous when Beth explained that the United States prohibits equal marriage for gay people. (This was before the shining exception of Massachusetts.) Beth says she experienced true freedom to have such basic respect for her family. It’s amazing to realize the same thing must be happening in Massachusetts where people are beginning to assume that equality is the everyday order of things.

John, Bob, Angie, and BETH helped us identify community leaders and organizations that might speak out publicly against the amendment, and we shared more details about Action Wisconsin and the campaign. Interestingly, they told us that the Superior police department has liaisons to the LGBT community and is generally solid on LGBT issues. The Superior mayor is no friend of basic equality for LGBT people. But area lawmakers, state Senator Bob Jauch, and Rep. Frank Boyle, are solidly opposed to the constitutional ban on civil unions and marriage.

It makes no sense to me why people would want to address problems with management by setting up another set of managers to get in between and muddy the waters even more. The AFSCME connection you point out clarifies your disgust with the articles.

I'm sorry to say that the rest of your riddles and inside jokes are lost on me, however. The tone of your response makes me think you'll interpret this is a sign of your mental superiority, but I think it says more about your communication skills. You'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar, and you'll win more support with logical arguements than with slander and inside jokes.

I checked it out, but I must've missed something. She wrote a positive letter about not letting vandalism shatter her view of an entire neighborhood (i.e. don't throw the baby out with the bathwater) and the link that was provided showed another letter about how the land trust group takes in lodgers for Grandma's to help fund their own program.

I like people who take a positive outlook on improving their neighborhoods and I think social programs like land trust should do more to become self-funding. Am I missing something here, or is this all good?

Reader's view: A crime doesn’t make a neighborhood bad

Sept. 1, someone uprooted a nasturtium next to my garage along the alley behind my house in Central Hillside.

I had planted the seed and encouraged it throughout the summer. The soil was little better than gravel. An overhang prevented rain from getting to it so I watered and fertilized it through dry spells and downpours.

And then it flowered, an unlikely bit of beauty in the alley. My happy discovery was moments, I think, before a vandal destroyed it.

It reminded me of the “honking tree” near Two Harbors, another victim of a destructive act. It also led me to think of recent crimes in Duluth. A murder in Central Hillside. An arrest on Grand Avenue. And the horrible kidnapping of a mother and her son in Congdon Park, aided and abetted by a nice, young hockey player from a private school.

A crime doesn’t make a neighborhood — or a city — bad. Destructive, disturbed and bad people can be found everywhere and throughout time. Labeling some of Duluth’s neighborhoods “bad” or “unsafe” carries overtones of racism and classism. Crimes happen uptown and downtown.

Creating safe homes, streets and neighborhoods is an ongoing community effort. But there are never any guarantees. Trouble can happen in and near your home and in the alleys behind your home, regardless of your address. We cannot live in fear, but we must not selectively downgrade neighborhoods to give ourselves false security.

I didn’t curse my neighborhood, the city or the world because of a nasturtium. I was mad, but did not jump to irrational conclusions. I’m sure a gardener from the toniest part of Duluth can point to such vandalism in her backyard. Safety can never be guaranteed. How do we live with this reality? I don’t know, but we must.

The Queer factor also helps hold down their numbers, but they seem to play for the the right team just long enough to hatch a kook, then move quickly back to their whacky world.

Actually, this Beth Olson is perfect for Duluth and I fully support her if our objective is to completely ruin the city. She looks like a kook, acts like a kook, has been arrested like a kook, has never done anything in her life like a kook, and I think she would be a great addition to the kooks who govern the DFL Duluth. Even that Kook Claire is supporting her for council. Beth is perfect. If it is backed by a kook, acts like a kook and is a kook, it is what Duluth needs to run the city even further into the ground. Go Beth! You can change teams again after the election.

Why is it that this Wide Load is always supporting the unofficial Sisters Cities one way exchange with Chicago and Detroit, yet itself lives in an upscale, DFL, elitist neighborhood far away from the trash she is supporting which will bring immigrates here?

Someone said something about casino money being earmarked for street repair. This is a meaningless statement.

Casino money has been used for things other than street repair in the past and can again in the future.

The money can be used for anything the council and administration decide to use it for. BTW this is the peoples money not some politician money. They change laws on a daily basis. That's what our elected official are for. They could take 18 millions from casino money if they wanted to.

Also I was simply using TIF and the casino as ways the city takes in money. So add another fee onto something that not everyone has to use to pay for the police station. The city raises money time and time again through taxes and fees other than property taxes. No wonder we are in trouble in this country, state, county and city. Old and present motto for the city of Duluth "We can't do that".

Cities brace for tax increment trouble

The imminent slashing of state-paid local government aid to municipal units in Northeastern Minnesota has been center stage in the 2003 legislative debate for closing the $4.2 billion budget hole for the two-year period starting July 1. But there’s a sleeper issue for some of those same municipalities that have aggressively used tax increment financing (TIF) to fund economic development.

Property tax reforms in 2001 that reduced commercial-industrial rates are starting to show up as smaller annual “increment” payments to municipalities to pay for their TIF development-related debt, and to reimburse developers for eligible expenses.

In its 2003 policy position paper, the League of Minnesota Cities contends the property tax reforms threaten the viability of the No. 1 financing tool available for community reinvestment.

“The TIF-deficit issue is much smaller (than the local government aid cutbacks), affecting only a handful of cities right now,” said Eric Willette, the League’s policy research manager. “ But it’s an indication of what the problem will be.”

Evidence suggests the reforms have reduced “captured tax capacity” — which generates TIF revenues — by 30 percent statewide since the 2001 property tax reforms, he said.

Municipalities with TIF deficits that issued general obligation debt to help finance economic development will have to levy additional property taxes to pay for shortfalls.

“We’re barely a year into the effects and we haven’t seen anything yet,” Willette said, noting that cities are at risk for the duration of the TIF districts they’ve created, typically eight to 20 years. “It’s a problem that will spread,” he said.

The Legislature unwittingly has compounded the problem. In 2001 it replaced a general education levy assessed on local taxpayers with additional money for K-12 per-pupil state aid. That’s provided some relief for property taxpayers, but has reduced captured tax capacity available to produce increment payments. And in 2002 it eliminated a $200 million fund created with the 2001 reforms to help municipalities make the transition to reduced TIF increment payments.

To date, no municipality in the region has felt the downside of TIF-financed development more than has the city of Virginia.

Instead of a broader tax base — the rationale for TIF — the city faces a tax increment deficit of about $250,000 this year, said Ron Lackner, finance director. Local property taxpayers already are funding about $200,000 of that deficit.

Virginia’s shortfall is partly due to the reduction of commercial-industrial property tax rates by the 2001 Legislature.

But some of that damage is self-inflicted. The city failed to submit annual financial reports to the state auditor for its TIF districts in both 2000 and 2001. In response, the state auditor has withheld the city’s annual payment since December 2001, which has grown to $395,000, according to the St. Louis County auditor, which actually releases those payments.

City councilors in Virginia were unaware that the reports hadn’t been filed until a May 27 finance committee meeting.

Lackner was responsible for preparing and filing those reports. In an interview, he offered no clear reason for the miscue, nor for his failure to alert other city officials. “I didn’t take care of the problem. It’s my responsibility . . . period,” he said.

Mayor Carolyn Gentilini didn’t respond to a telephone request for further details. Other city officials said privately that Lackner has been spread thin by staff cutbacks in the finance department, and myriad financial problems in the largest municipality on the depressed East Range.

He has filed the 2002 report which is due July 30. Lackner said the city is assured of receiving its 2003 TIF payment of about $359,000 in early July.

He also predicted unspecified issues that prevented the annual filings in 2000 and 2001 will be resolved, and the $395,000 withheld will be released in time to make a TIF-related refunding bond payment due in August.

Virginia has created six TIF districts: three are generating positive cash-flow, three are not. Excess increments from the three with positive cash flow are being pooled to offset some of the losses in the other three, Lackner said.

The single-largest element in Virginia’s TIF-related annual deficit — $200,000 of the approximate $250,000 total — is the Coates Hotel / Park Inn International District. The city sold general obligation bonds to finance improvements at the downtown hotel, and the expected increment was dedicated to retiring that debt. But no increment has resulted because the property’s taxable value has not increased, and its tax rate dropped with the 1991 state reforms.

Those general obligation bonds are backed by the full faith and credit of the city, and taxpayers are “obligated” to meet the $200,000 annual shortfall.

That’s a significant addition to the $1.5 million local levy portion of the city’s operating budget.

Rube, are you really as stupid as you sound? As it is the property tax is going to pay for the police station. It will be added directly to our house taxes. Now there is casino money, TIF money, and many other ways money is collected for the city. Perhaps Stauber wanted to look at one of those areas for funding. Now I'm tired of changing your diaper.

As for a job being unions I could care less as long as they are not extorting money out of me. I can tell you this. If garbage pick up had been turned over to the city as one councilor wanted a few years back we would be paying a hell of a lot more than we are now. My garbage man even let me negotiate a fee. I do not pay as much as my neighbor. It's called free enterprise. I could just see me trying to negotiate a fee with AFSCME or the Administration. ha ha
