Oberstar's political career will be over the next election. His vote will increase everything we buy and will kill the mining industry up here on the Range. Living up here on the range, I was neither Democrat or Republican but just in the last 3 months I can say that I will not ever vote for a democrat again. They have killed this economy with their stupid legistlation and tax increases. I believe we will see our first elected Republican or Independent on the range the next election without a doubt.

80708 - Mon Jun 29 13:23:06 2009 - [Mean spirited agendas destroying area] By: Nancy A
Anyone who has experienced the ugly side of Duluth, knows that the 'truth' however mean it sounds, is the truth needs to be told. Some of the culprits are very 'mean spirited' indeed so in that respect it would be hard to change the subject matter. Honest citizens should not have to protect those who are derelict in their duty by being quiet. What is in the best interests of the public and tax paying citizens? There should be such a thing as the 'public's right to know - the right to speak, the right to understand' because we all have a right to have an opinion as to what we've observed and discovered.

Not too long ago, the DNT declined to cover a documented story about the harassment and mobbing by Duluth City and St Louis County employees of private citizens and some co- workers. Administrators of our local government did nothing to stop this behavior, some even encouraged it. This blatant discrimination and bullying within local offices, which continues undercover, is a big part of what is destroying this city.

Maybe Mr Stahl is confusing the 'truth about what is happening in Duluth' and IS 'mean spirited' with individuals trying to bring awareness to the public. If we eliminate the dialogue, the peoples 'right to know' continues to be broad sided. Thank You DCB for the right to exercise free speech, a tool that is very necessary if the public hopes to see any progress in this city of monopolies being run by the mob.

It occurred to me over the weekend that Obamba is taking America on same course the French Nobles took France in the 1700's. He's got hockey and college to get out of the way but he's got the moxy to be quite successful in whatever he does when he's an old, like us codgers. Ted Nugent: Our Founding Fathers would be mortified
The Waco Tribune-Herald 6/28/09 Ted Nugent

As the stunned and defeated British army marched out of Yorktown, its band appropriately played “A World Turned Upside Down.”

Our forefathers pledged their lives and fortunes to fight and defeat the world’s mightiest army and give birth to America. Our victory over King George was the greatest military upset in the annals of human history.

George Washington believed our amazing victory was a result of divine providence.

The dream of limited government, personal freedom and liberty, rugged individualism, and self-sufficiency for which our forefathers fought and died is rapidly disappearing in 2009. Once again it is a world turned upside down.

Instead of heeding the warnings of our forefathers, we have embraced big government. Independent? No, over the last half-century we have become more dependent on Fedzilla — the federal beast with a voracious appetite for our tax dollars. We once again are becoming subjects, not citizens.

Big government punishes producers and risk-takers while rewarding simpletons that it has conned into believing it is helping. Fedzilla is the enemy of the free market and freedom.

Instead of allowing the free market to correct itself, big government meddles in it and makes things worse. Exhibits A and B: Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

Using our tax dollars, Fedzilla has purchased General Motors, and bailed out AIG and other financial institutions.

A trillion-dollar economic stimulus lawmakers approved but did not read may be the ultimate example of grotesque meddling and spending.

Now for the latest initiative “we must solve immediately.” President Obama wants to Fedzillarize health care.

Ailment, not cure

Placing your health in bureaucratic hands is like asking a drunk driver for a ride. Big government will destroy your health. It’s a cancer unto itself.

Higher taxes and more government lead to economic genocide. Alternatively, lower taxes, less government and more independence lead to prosperity for all who are willing to take advantage of it.

Our forefathers who threw tea over the side of the ship in Boston Harbor knew this. The people who’ve attended Tea Parties know it. Do you?

Sometime during your July 4 celebration, you should take a few moments and read the Declaration of Independence aloud to your children, relatives and guests. Read it slowly. Let the words sink in.

Then reflect on our forefathers, they who bravely signed their names to it, thereby signing their own death warrants.

Think about that. They were willing to die for limited federal government, independence, freedom and liberty.

They didn’t fight and die for freedom so that our government could provide its subjects with housing, food, transportation and health care.

To my fellow Americans who still cherish the dream of our founding fathers, I wish you a wonderful and Happy Independence Day. To those of you who are willing to compromise your liberty and freedom in the hopes that big government will provide you an artificial blanket of security, enjoy your Dependence Day.

Things are warming up in DFL Duluth. Two crimes involving weapons. Attempted 2nd Degree Murder and an Armed Robbery.

DFL09 you had better hire more firefighters and buy some more beds and new kitchen appliances to help with the latest DFL Duluth crime wave.

While you’re at it DFL09, why not start a lottery for the next murder. $10 per guess. Look at all the money for new stripper poles for the FD and help fund all those disability retirements from off duty injuries.

Remember a lottery is not a tax!

My guess is July 13th at 2:49AM near the Kozy. My WIDELOAD's cafe down the avenue is the safe house.

Where do I send the money?

Anyone else want to take a stab at when the next murder will occur?

80683 - Thu Jun 25 00:25:12 2009 - [Similar size cities spend much less ] By: Erik H
The City of Duluth needs to take a new look at how it provides services to it's citizens. We can't keep doing things the way we always have, if we do we'll need either huge tax increases or severe cuts to city services.

I think the city needs to look at areas where it's spending is out of line with spending in similar sized cities. One area in which we are a huge outlier is in the cost of fire protection services.

How can we keep up a strong level of fire protection while reducing the cost to that of the level other similar sized cities spend? The answe is in using a team of firefighters made up of both professional and non-professional firefighters.

We need a team of professional firefighters on duty 24 hours a day at the downtown firehall. Duluth does have some unique features like the ore docks and pier structures, a team of professional firefighters stationed at the downtown firehall can provide the extra protection we need for these structures.

At the community firehalls we should have one professional fire fighter on 24 hours a day to ready the fire equipment when an alarm is called in and fill out the fire response team with well trained volunteers.

This plan would still use more professional firefighters that other cities our size use, but would substantially decrease the cost of fire protection while still preserving a high level of fire protection services for our citizens.

http://s80.photobucket.com/albums/j191/mikesamerica/mikesamerica2/?action=view¤t64130.jpg

Michelle One

On Sunday, President Obama flew back to the United States on Air Force One. His wife, two daughters and her mother did a bit of shopping in Paris before taking their own Boeing 757 (C-32) over to London to do some sight seeing.

We all remember Obama’s admonishment to corporate CEO’s in February:

“You can’t get corporate jets, you can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers dime.”

Apparently that doesn’t apply to his wife.

The London Times opened it’s description of Michelle’s visit this way:

Motorcycle outriders, armored Chevrolets and bullet-headed men in raincoats criss-crossed London yesterday as Michelle Obama and her daughters spent a second day on an unofficial visit to the capital.

The Times went on to describe that when Michelle and the girls arrived at Westminster Abbey, the building was closed to tourists with people already in told to “wait against the wall.” An American visiting the Abbey said “Right then I knew it was probably someone from our ‘royal family’.”

http://s80.photobucket.com/albums/j191/mikesamerica/mikesamerica2/?action=view¤t=article-1191620-05457AB0000005DC-73.jpg

Michelle’s motorcade shut down the London street above as the First Lady of the World and her children go for Fish and Chips at a pub in Mayfair. The entourage inside the restaurant was 15 people while dozens more wait outside. Include the dozens of Air Force personnel to fly and service the plane, embassy personnel and other staff and we are talking about a serious expenditure of tax payer dollars.

Meanwhile, millions of Americans have lost their jobs and won’t be able to take their family on a summer holiday. Despite their circumstances they’ll still be expected to fork over the tax dollars to pay for Michelle’s trip!

Too near the truth. Life is a gift, you are all a gift. Anger does nothing to help any of you come together. We all have a common interest and that is to live, love, find and experience joy and love to the fullest. If you wake to to seek the fight, think twice.

Look around you and see people, see life, see the Universe, see couples holding hands in the rose garden, see people crying love! Realize life is bigger and better than you can grasp.

There is truly more. Government cannot, nor will it ever free you. Freedom comes from a love of life, embracing the natural beauty that surrounds you, the people that love you, the people you love, the kids kicking whatever around, the freedom of saying, "I like this, I hate that" is guaranteed by the US Constitution.

This, my beloved American friends is our common ground. Live free or die.

Good night and may your blessings overwhelm your trials and tribulations. Life is the ultimate gift!!!!!!!

This visitor knows Duluth is more than Canal Park. Let's be real and admit that the Ho Chi Minh Trail had more going for it than the condition of DFL Duluth streets.

Good luck attracting people to move to a decaying DFL city.

From unfunded DFL retiree health care to the city officials world travel; Duluth residents pay taxes and fees, lots of taxes and fees, but never enough for the DFL.

Reader's view: Condition of Duluth streets is shameful

I was visiting relatives in Duluth last week. They live in the Spirit Valley area, and while driving around trying to locate the address we experienced what can only be described as molar-jarring potholes that punctuated blocks of decaying asphalt (“Duluth mayor to announce major plan to improve streets,” March 23). The first words out of my mouth were, “Don’t you people pay taxes?” My cousin assured me they did.

The houses and yards in the area were well-cared-for and attractive, but I’m guessing the owners’ cars are battered and bruised by daily beatings as they come and go. Shame on this otherwise beautiful city.

Fortunately, most tourists don’t get past the lovely harbor and scenic views. Residents don’t have the luxury of enjoying all that; they’re forced to drive, eyes on the road, looking for a safe path to and from home.

It is rather amusing to watch "pro DFD" talk about that house that burned on saturday. Especially how he says we "saved the house" He must be smoking the wacky stuff again, as it seems to me the only thing they saved is the basement. The house will probably have to be torn down and rebuilt. Where is the nearest fire hall?? About 50th ave e and superior st? Any small town volunteer fire department could have saved the basement like they did.

I'm not against having a paid fire department, but not one that owns the mayor and city council. Keep to your job of putting out fires and stop all the political pontification, we duluth residents are sick of hearing about it.

STARFIRE: Big Iron, I've been wondering what the DFD will use as a slogan now that they like to wave the U.S. flag on each and every one of their Subway emergencies. The DFD waves the flag more than the U.S. Marines. If the Marines are, "The Few, The Proud, The Marines", what is the flag waving DFD bloggimg team? How about, The Greedy, The Shameless, The DFD"? Just think how it looks to bystanders when the DFD claims victory over a total loss and the bystanders see the U.S. flag a waving. Sad, very very sad.

I also get a kick how the DFD dorks pound their chests and claim victory over a fire and yell "LOOK AT US! WE'RE PUTTING A FIRE OUT!" Well, isn't that your JOB? What you're paid to do? I don't see others bragging about doing the jobs they are supposed to be doing, but like the weather forecasters around here, looks like you blew another one DFD. Another house totaled. Yup, keep pounding those chests. You're really something to be proud of!

Saved the house? It was DESTROYED! $200,000 in damage. How did you "save" it? According to the neighbors, they thought it was a rather poor effort by the DFD, and I believe them.

STARFIRE: jthyme, it appears that the DFD is now taking credit for the basements they "save" in order to pump up their numbers and get more free money from the struggling taxpayers. They should be ashamed, but the money is just too damn good to be ashamed. And the money is too easy to get as they have already bought and paid for the councilors they need in order to keep the free money flowing into their pockets. Bravo for Fedora for his actions. If I could vote for him I would next time. He has every right to question legality, possible conflict of interest of action of other councilors.

There is still the problem of a councilor telling a blatant lie to the tax payers of Duluth and press about the total money she did receive.
There is still the problem of a councilor calling the questioning of her actions "sexist and abusive" when there was clearly none at all during the discussion that night. Accusing someone of such by someone holding a public office is not acceptable in no shape or form and is slanderous. She should resign or be forced out of office.

Dear Claire

I rather like the local newspaper spilling the beans on local politicians and wrongdoers in office. It can be almost impossible to charge some of these offenders because of the way the system is manipulated to protect them.

Nothing is gained from a refusal to publish facts and nothing will change if we allow those in office to continue business as usual. For far too long, Duluth citizens have been held in the dark about what goes on behind City and County government doors.

Having a newspaper that provides the public with some behind the scences facts and information, really is progress in action. Citizens should be able to make up their own minds based on honest information about their City.

I think that there is a big differnce between someone being late paying property taxes, and someone using taxpayers money to take a transcontinental trip.

Then Claire, this must also mean Mr. Cuneo who worked so hard to legislate a new weatherization program for moderate income people like himself to take advantage of. One would think Mr. Cuneo could've sent his buddy Roger Reinart an e-mail to do Legislative work seeing as Roger is a Legislator!! But no Mr.Cuneo spent time in Mpls. area doing someone elses job when he cannot even do his own..Although he is very honest as I saw the last Council Meeting when he called himself an Idiot!! So bottom line Claire do your homework, pay attention, and stay out of things you know nothing about.

Reader's view: Councilors shouldn’t spend time digging up dirt

All’s well that ends well. Duluth City Attorney Gunnar Johnson found City Councilor Todd Fedora’s concerns regarding possible malfeasance by Councilor Sharla Gardner were without merit (“Duluth councilor’s Japan trip wasn’t improper, city attorney says,” June 10). Wonderful! We can all go back to our regularly scheduled programming.

I’d like to suggest, however, that in the future, our elected officials spend more time actually engaged in city business and waste less time trying to dig up dirt on each another. I’d also suggest, in the future, the News Tribune actually does its homework and gets the facts of the matter straight before running vituperative editorials based on a lot of nothing.

Not only did Gardner deserve better than to be persecuted by a colleague seemingly intent on pursuing a political vendetta, but this community deserved better than to have to witness such an absurd farce played out on the pages of its local newspaper.

In regard to the recent revelations of misconduct by certain members of City Council, I speak on behalf of a large number of citizens when calling for the immediate resignations of Sharla Gardner and Tony Cuneo.

Mr. Cuneo destroyed his trust with the public by failing to pay thousands in local taxes when simultaneously voting to raise taxes on a public that is over burdened by increasing city taxes and fees, including the new sewer fee approved this week.

By knowingly placing this burden on private citizens, while refusing to pay his fair share, Cuneo has brought disgrace to City Hall at a time when we need leadership of the utmost integrity.

Despite a convenient ruling by an apparently biased city attorney, it is without a doubt Ms. Gardner demonstrated conflict of interest by accepting money from the Sister Cities Commission. Are there not countless other citizens who could have served as our ambassador to avoid this conflict? But instead Gardner took advantage of her position and most importantly, lied to the public.

The citizens of Duluth have had it with the fact the most notable news about our leaders has centered on their dishonesty, hypocrisy and disgrace rather than actual solutions to our city’s many problems.

I will be bringing this matter before city council at your next meeting. If there is no action taken by council, I and others will take our demands to the steps of City Hall with a very public protest.

I remember an economist named Ned Hill who came to Duluth and said what needed to be said and no one listened. Since Hill’s visit to Duluth in about 2004, the city condition has worsened but we are getting new schools we did not have to opportunity to vote for.

We can only hope the status quo and those elected to represent them, start to represent us by listening and acting accordingly. This is the same old multi-generational DFL sorry ass story in a dying DFL city.

What’s next? A dose of DFL Kool-Aid from the Chamber of Commerce telling us how good we have it in a decaying city that is a billion dollars in debt whose newest residents are here for social services for organizations that do not pay the same taxes as a private entity?

Duluth is a DFL city. We have all seen the billboards, “This is DFL Country”. I only wonder what the DFL has really done for Duluth.

The DFL is today’s reason to go green and read the LIB online for free saving money, energy and the trees. The money saved can go to the new DFL Duluth sewer fee, the latest in a long legacy of taxation through fees.

Survey shows Duluth residents unhappy with city services
A random survey of Duluth residents found low satisfaction in many key areas, from crime prevention to business development to the state of the city’s parks and roads.
By: Brandon Stahl, Duluth News Tribune

The good news is that 79 percent of Duluth residents say their city is a good place to live.

But that’s one of only a few positive findings in a survey that found low satisfaction in many key areas, from crime prevention to business development to the state of the city’s parks and roads.

Only 2 percent of Duluth residents say the city’s road repair is “good” or “excellent,” according to a survey paid for primarily by the city of Duluth. Mayor Don Ness said the road repair rating stood out among many for being “atrocious.”

“We have taken aggressive steps on improvement that we hope will help out with that number,” he said, citing his street repair plan that will reconstruct or repair 15 to 20 miles of roads over the next five years.

Ness listed street repair as one of many “opportunities for improvement” highlighted by the survey.

About 1,200 randomly chosen residences were sent questionnaires beginning on March 9, with nearly half responding. The survey has a 4 percent margin of error.

The group that conducted the survey, National Research Center, used benchmark numbers to compare Duluth’s responses with other cities. In many areas, Duluth fell below those benchmarks.

For example, while nearly 74 percent of respondents said they would recommend living in Duluth to someone who asked and 78 percent said they planned to live in the city for five years, both were below national averages.

The city also was below national standards when it came to economic sustainability, with only 37 percent of respondents saying the city was good or excellent as a place to work, and only

14 percent saying the city had good or excellent job opportunities.

When it comes to public safety, 91 percent of residents said they felt safe in their neighborhood — above national benchmarks. But that number drops to 71 percent at night — about the same as national benchmarks — and at night in downtown, the number drops to 20 percent, below national standards.

Resident satisfaction with city parks and recreation centers also was below national averages, as were ratings of public library services and public schools, with only 48 percent of respondents saying schools in the city were good or excellent.

Ness said he hoped to use the survey as a baseline for improvement.

“That’s the value of hearing from residents and hearing what they say,” he said. “It allows us to hear from residents who are paying attention, but … don’t necessarily show up to a council meeting.”

Ness said he hoped to conduct the survey every year to measure the city’s improvement. The cost of the survey was about $12,000, $4,000 of which was paid for through grants by SMDC and the Duluth Local Initiatives Support Coalition.

US cities may have to be bulldozed in order to survive

Dozens of US cities may have entire neighbourhoods bulldozed as part of drastic "shrink to survive" proposals being considered by the Obama administration to tackle economic decline.

The government looking at expanding a pioneering scheme in Flint, one of the poorest US cities, which involves razing entire districts and returning the land to nature.

Local politicians believe the city must contract by as much as 40 per cent, concentrating the dwindling population and local services into a more viable area.

The radical experiment is the brainchild of Dan Kildee, treasurer of Genesee County, which includes Flint.

Having outlined his strategy to Barack Obama during the election campaign, Mr Kildee has now been approached by the US government and a group of charities who want him to apply what he has learnt to the rest of the country.

Mr Kildee said he will concentrate on 50 cities, identified in a recent study by the Brookings Institution, an influential Washington think-tank, as potentially needing to shrink substantially to cope with their declining fortunes.....

Dave C,

Thank you the excellent question on the bear market rally.

The current bear market rally is being driven by speculation, much like the oil prices last year. Keep in mind money is made on both sides of the market, up and down, with calls and puts. Someone is on the losing side of the each transaction.

Now look at the most basic of market fundamentals.

You first must start with the price earnings, PE, ratio. This is the ratio between a share's price and profit (earnings).

Look at the S&P 500, where stocks with a PE ratio above 17 are considered expensive. Look at the chart below and the PE ratios are off the chart.

http://tal.marketgauge.com/dvMGPro/charts/charts.asp?chart=PERATI

According to BullandBearWise, an increasing PE ratio between 15 and 30 is considered bullish, while a PE ratio above 30 or a declining PE ratio is considered bearish.

Dave, your question is very good and it motivated me to give my blog followers a look into the future by Dr. Marc Faber in a recent interview.

My elitist friend LMAO(aka (C)laire, Suzanne and 17 more aliases),

So are you saying it's acceptable to lie at a city council meeting as long as your linguistic abilities are better than another person’s?

Or are you saying a person who makes erratum cannot file a lawsuit.

To me, you do not have to have a Masters in British History, to know this of course is idiotic. But then again...

How about when a barbarous person continually writes countless blogs under numerous names? Is this person to have any credibility?

Where is the lingual diversity darling?

Another good Scandanavian name in the Duluth paper. I was half expecting the name in this article to be Letterman:

A Duluth man is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old and encouraging her to forge $6,500 in checks.

Markease Arque Canty, 28, faces three felony counts as a party to the forgery and one misdemeanor count of sexual intercourse with a child. The criminal complaint was filed June 5 in Douglas County, the same day a warrant was issued for Canty’s arrest.

Suzanne/Claire is worried about exposing more of the liar councilors based on her comments on the Buzz. This lady can’t even cut her grass. No wonder Krause is on the grass cutting ordinance thing.

She posted at http://www.areavoices.com/buzz/index.cfm :

There was no conflict. Based on the theory that if you take money (or in this case a plane ticket) from a group and then vote on their funding, that's a conflict... well, every councilor would be in conflict because they all get paid by the City and then vote the City budget! Conflict is only an issue if the person gains personally from their vote. Gardener was acting as a City representative, and did have expenses she paid on her own as well as having her air fare covered. Councilors get reimbursed for mileage if they go to St. Paul on behalf of the City, so is that a conflict? Of course not. No elected official can be expected to pay for business travel, and accepting a plane ticket when acting on the part of the City cannot be a conflict!
Mr. Kinsey had a big FEDORA bumper sticker on his car during the 1st District election, so he's clearly a supporter of Councilor Fedora. I suspect that is at least partly what motivated him to write to the Attorney General's office. It's a shame he can't accept that no conflict exists and move on. I don't see how anyone reading the statute cited in Attorney Johnson's opinion can still say there is a conflict.
I certainly hope this level of attack doesn't continue against every other councilor who may accept mileage or other travel expense coverage while acting as our representative, or nothing will ever get done around here.

I once read that most people never read that far into newspaper article. Go figure. Nice of the DNT to give some kind of description a week after the first assault/robbery........NOT! 80620 - Fri Jun 12 11:01:28 2009 - [Cuneo is right out of Popeye] By: Popeye
Cuneo can be explained this way. I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today

"I'd like you to lend me some money"

Etymology is from the cartoon "Popeye", where the character Wimpy would frequently utter this phrase. He was a glutton, and would consume burgers at a ferocious rate but could rarely pay for his habit.

The phrase implies the underlying feeling that the person will unlikely actually pay for the hamburger (or whatever) on Tuesday (or ever, for that matter.

I told my bank that I'd gladly 'pay them tuesday for a hamburger today' to buy that new sportscar, but they wouldn't approve me.

Reader's view: Councilor’s tax delinquency a betrayal of public trust

That Duluth City Councilor Tony Cuneo was severely delinquent in paying property taxes on two properties in the city of Duluth was clearly a betrayal of the public trust (“Duluth councilor’s tax debt exposed, settled,” May 23). I highly doubt Cuneo ever mentioned his enormous debt to the public while campaigning to represent the citizens of Duluth.

Cuneo stated, “It’s not uncommon for working families to have a tough time paying the bills from time to time.” Perhaps Cuneo should have considered his school loans and future obligations before deciding to become a homeowner and a landlord. Is it the public’s fault he saw fit to purchase a rental unit that needed costly repairs? I wonder how long his tenants would be able to stay in their units if they were thousands of dollars behind in rent. Cuneo seemed to think his financial responsibilities to the public coffers were not a high enough priority to be included in his decision on which bills to pay first.

Extremely poor judgment of this nature proved his lack of financial integrity, especially considering the debt could have been reduced a long time ago by making payments with money he had been, as he said, “saving.”

Duluth taxpayers should hold him responsible for this betrayal by choosing a more qualified individual in the voting booth in 2011. Someone who doesn’t pay their taxes until the truth is uncovered shouldn’t be trusted with the authority to increase the tax burdens of others. It is clear that liberals like Cuneo don’t mind raising taxes on others while shirking their own.

Cuneo also doesn’t believe his personal financial affairs of the past, present and future should be included in the judgments voters make when considering candidates. Well, let me uncover another truth: bull!

80615 - Thu Jun 11 16:24:32 2009 - [If you take a DFL dump, FLUSH] By: Duluthian
I am not a DCB regular, but as a citizen of this city, I have a few things to get off my chest.
1. I am a male. I have a young daughter who is potty training. When she says she has to go, it means NOW. I have to take her into a mens room when there is no family restroom available. The majority of the mens room stalls are disgusting. Usually the toilet seat is covered in urine. There is also usually a pot full of feces and toilet paper because whoever used the stall never attempted to flush. To those of you who have to urinate in a stall because you can't go with the big boys at the urinals, at least raise the seat! If you take a dump, FLUSH.
Thank you to those businesses that do have a family restroom, it is greatly appreciated. And thank you to those who keep restrooms clean.
2. The parking at play front really sucks. This was a park that my kids love to play at. Now, not only do I have to pay to park their, but most of the time the lot is full and we can't get anywhere near it. Their should be 1 hour stalls dedicated to playfront users.
3. City streets. HMMMMM. I would gladly pay more in property taxes to have decent streets to drive on. The decreased cost of vehicle repairs and tires would be a savings.
4. Our city council. Our local economy is in the tank, along with tax collections for local option sales tax. Our infrastructure is crumbling. Parks are over grown and we have to recruit volunteers for work that our employees were previously doing. All of this, and were focusing our energy on a stupid conflict of interest argument for a councilor who represented our city well??? COME ON. Look at the big picture and quit with the petty stuff. We need a major change in the council.
All right then- I got a few things off my chest. Thanks to the DCB for giving me a place to vent.

THIS IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF THE DFL LYING MINDSET

DFL Investing for Your Great Grandchildren

We all need to think more about the world we leave for our great grandchildren, but we don't want government doing the investing. Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson has found some interesting information about a “green” project in Medina that has been applauded for saving taxpayers money. The energy saving project was to install solar panels on the Medina Public Works building which was just completed. Government officials are talking about how this project will save $15,000 per year in energy costs. However, thanks to some digging by Commissioner Johnson, we now know that the project's total cost was $900,000. Saving $15,000 means that the true savings won't begin until the year 2070. A 60 year pay back...now that's some great "green" government investment.

NATURE OF INCIDENT:Cab Driver Robbed
BY:Officer Brad Wick, Public Information Officer
________________________________________________________________________________
Description:On Thursday, June 11, 2009, a cab driver reported that he had been assaulted and robbed by three males. The driver told officers that he had picked up a male fare in the 300 block of East 5th Street and drove him to the 1200 block of East #4 alley where the two other males were waiting. The driver said the male in the cab then struck him in the back of the head and the two other males then pulled him from the cab and continued the assault and then robbed him.

This is the second reported robbery of a cab driver this week. On Monday, June 8, 2009, at 0109 hours, a cab driver reported that he had been robbed by three males at 8th Avenue East and 6th Street. The cab had been called to that location to pick up a fare and upon arrival a single male entered the cab, pulled out a handgun, and demanded money from the driver. The first suspect was then joined by two other suspects and they then proceeded to assault and rob the cab driver. (Case # 09292753)

Sharla's comment doesn't make sense to me. I think that more than anything Duluth Citizens want the Truth, 'good' public policy, and honest public employees. Duluth citizens 'deserve' this but the truth remains very elusive here.
There's many public employees who feel that they are above the law. Then they bend what laws they can't get around for thier own self serving interests. Besides being a councilor, Gardner is also a St. Louis Co. employee? Okay then, now everything is finally starting to make some sense!
Sharla says:
"... Now I basically want to look ahead and move forward and work together with everyone on the city council, which is what the citizens want, and want to show that the council has the capability of working together in making good public policy and give the citizens of Duluth what they deserve."

I have never seen the Duluth News Tribune website this busy. A lot of people are upset with Gardner's conduct which is obviously unbecoming of city official.

Let’s see if the DNT will post the truth about the in process smear campaign and Ralph Doty biased editioral.

The One and Only Tony Ramone!

MY DNT POST:

Sharla Gardner was endorsed by AFSCME and is a former AFSCME Executive Board member who resigned to take office. Gardner was endorsed by the DFL and AFSCME for the council. She is a Progressive, better known as socialist at these people are anything but progressive.

Not by coincidence, Claire K is a member of Progressive Actions Steering committee as can be seen at this link: http://www.prog-action.org/index.html

Progressive Action has many members of local public employee unions within including AFSCME operatives.

Sharla Gardner is also an employee of St. Louis County.

Apparently the people’s tax money in Duluth, $94,000, is for those in power to do with what they want and then when questioned in a formal setting lies and accuse the questioner of be a sexist. Gardner even called the factual reporting based on her own words, “tabloid journalism”. Reporting what see said is hardly tabloid material.

This is right out of Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, rule 3 which can be viewed at: http://www.vcn.bc.ca/citizens-handbook/rules.html

Rule 3: Whenever possible, go outside the experience of an opponent. Here you want to cause confusion, fear, and retreat.

This is no accident as AFSCME leadership receives Saul Alinsky training at the rules are being deployed in accordance with the training.

Politicians like Sharla Gardner represents the far left socialist ideals of the AFSCME union leadership over the people of Duluth.

The far left is dedicated to overthrowing our Constitutional system, and they will go to any length to conceal their radicalism from the public.

An effort is underway using Ralph Doty of the Duluth Budgeteer to write a negative column against Councilor Fedora. They are also orchestrating a letter writing campaign to this newspaper’s Letters to Editor. The purpose is to deflect and further smear Councilor Fedora and divert attention away from the fact that a sitting member of the city council broke city charter. You will see this occur this coming weekend.

In conclusion, the self serving agendas are easy to see and the city charter needs to be changed or adhered to. Additionally, Councilor Gardner’s conduct in the handling of this matter is embarrassing at best for the people of Duluth.

City attorney: Gardner did not have conflict
Duluth City Councilor Sharla Gardner did not have a conflict of interest when she voted to allocate money to Sister Cities or when she took a trip to Japan that was paid for in part by the organization, according to City of Duluth attorney Gunnar Johnson.
By: Brandon Stahl, Duluth News Tribune

Duluth City Councilor Sharla Gardner did not have a conflict of interest when she voted to allocate money to Sister Cities or when she took a trip to Japan that was paid for in part by the organization, according to City of Duluth attorney Gunnar Johnson.

Johnson’s opinion was issued about a month after it was requested by councilor Todd Fedora, who argued that Gardner’s trip violated the City Charter, which prohibits an officer of the city from receiving anything of value except lawful compensation.

In his opinion, however, Johnson said Gardner’s airline ticket, which Sister Cities paid for, “was not an improper gift,” but “rather it was an expense associated with her official duties,” which he said is an exception of the gift ban under state law.

Johnson also wrote that since 2007, when Sister Cities became a nonprofit, the city has had a contractual relationship with the organization that allows for councilors to be reimbursed for travel expenses when they’re the official delegate on a Sister Cities exchange.

“The councilor was provided an airline ticket to Japan by the Corporation "Sister Cities
,” Johnson wrote, “which is consistent with the contract terms.”

Johnson also said that because Gardner had no personal financial interest when she voted on the 2009 contract and allocation of more than $30,000 in tourism tax dollars to Sister Cities, she “had no expectation of a personal financial benefit.”

“The counselor has no ownership in the Corporation, was not an officer or director of the Corporation, was not compensated by the corporation and has no other interest in the contract.”

Had the city attorney found that Gardner violated the city’s conflict of interest code, under the City Charter Gardner could have been disqualified from office.

When the issue came up a month ago during an agenda session of the City Council, Gardner initially said that she paid her own way to Japan, but later said that Sister Cities paid a couple hundred dollars to help for costs of the ticket before it was revealed that the nonprofit paid for the entire ticket.

Gardner said she was not immediately available to comment.

Fedora said he was pleased that the city attorney “offered clarity to the issue.”

“Now more than ever it’s important to move forward,” he said.

Asked if he agreed with the decision, Fedora replied, “I don’t have the legal background to either agree or disagree with the city attorney.”

He also said he has not decided if he will take any other action on the issue, such as asking an opinion of the state Attorney General.

Not only are you feeling the increases in taxes, fees, fines from your local government but it is only a matter of time until we all really get hit with even larger cost increases for individuals and government.

Take a look at China for a notice I received today:

Chinese banks hit this week hard, with Guo Shuqing of China Commerce Bank (CCB) calling for the U.S. Treasury to issue bonds denominated in Chinese Yuan rather than U.S. dollars.

He said the World Bank should get in the game as well, along with Hong Kong and Singapore…all in a bid to stimulate the spread of Chinese finance abroad.

Now this would all be lip service if CCB hadn’t just opened their first branch in the U.S. last week. But they did, and unlike many of the world’s talking heads, Guo’s actually walking his walk.

Manufacturing accounts for 43% of GDP in China, India (24%), Korea (27%) and Taiwan (26%). U.S. manufacturing contributes only 12% of GDP growth.

Everywhere in China there is construction going on, literally thousands of construction sites, high rises for apartments, sometimes 50 stories high, new offices and factories, new super highways and overpasses (flyovers), and every airport was spacious and modern.

In fact the Chinese infrastructure is in stark contrasts to the pot holed roads and streets in the U.S. and the congested airports - but then in China, almost everything is new - and Western business and products are everywhere - from high fashion designer shops, to names you know.

China is taking a bath on its U.S. investments – losing as much as $270 billion a year. So they're picking up their marbles and heading home. And when America's largest financial backer leaves the table, rest assured it will be bad news for the dollar.

Why should you care?

Because a weaker U.S. dollar hits you squarely in the wallet. It means HIGHER costs everywhere... Soaring gas prices, mortgage rates and food costs for starters. Slashed purchasing power. A “cat food” standard of living.

If you think the streets in Duluth are bad now, what could be ahead?

So, Doty is going to write a column about an event that ocurred more than a month ago? Hmmmmmmm.

The real story in this event is not the possible conflict, it's the untruths from the councilor involved. From fully paying for her trip, to only a few hundred dollars to the whole damn ticket. Gardner has nobody to blame but herself. The more she talked, the deeper the hole got.

I found Stahl's transcripts very, very interesting.

80595 - Mon Jun 8 22:26:00 2009 - [Sharla girl should step down] By: Jimmy D.
Stan, Gardner has to attack Fedora on a personal level because she has been caught cheating and should lose her council seat. Her last best resort is to diminish Fedora and the left will do it by any means necessary. I don't believe it will work this time. The general public has figured her out along with AFSCME/DFL/DFD. Sharla girl should step down but it will never happen. The liberals will find an excuse for her to stay. Fedora is right on in taking this issue further. If the tables were turned we all know the left would attack Fedora with nothing left behind. I am represented by Fosle out west but those citizens out East ought to really look at what is happening and what they are about to do with Fedora. Fedora is the one with the most knowledge on fiscal issues moreso than anyone on the council including our Mayor. By the way, Ralph Doty is a political has-been. Kinda like Al Gore...

Word on the street is that Councilor Pinocchio, the one with her hand caught in the cookie jar with Sister Cities, was livid on Friday due to the transcripts being posted by the Duluth News Tribune on a reporter's blog. As a result, she, along with her cronies on Park Point, are lobbying Ralph Doty to write a negative column against Fedora. They are also orchestrating a letter writing campaign. Watch for the "Duluth News Tribune Letters to Editor Deflection Campaign", and "Smear the Questioner". You heard it hear first. From what I've been told, it's quite the little campaign committee that's been organized.

President Obama,

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

TAXED TO DEATH (author unknown)

Tax his land, tax his bed,
Tax the table at which he's fed.
Tax his tractor, tax his mule,
Teach him taxes are the rule.
Tax his work, tax his pay,
He works for peanuts anyway!
Tax his cow, tax his goat,
Tax his pants, tax his coat.
Tax his ties, tax his shirt,
Tax his work, tax his dirt.
Tax his tobacco, tax his drink,
Tax him if he cares to think.
Tax his cigars, tax his beers,
If he cries tax his tears.
Tax his car, tax his gas,
Find other ways to tax his ass.
Tax all he has then let him know
That you won't be done till he has no dough.
When he screams and hollers, then tax him some more,
tax him till he's good and sore.
Then tax his coffin, tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he's laid.
Put these words upon his tomb,
"Taxes drove me to my doom."
When he's gone do not relax,
it's time to apply the inheritance tax.

I start to wonder if National health insurance/care may be the better of two evils. The taxpayers are already on the hook for so many of those at highest risk for need of health care(elderly, poor, etc). Look at the city of Duluth's 300 million dollar health care fiasco. Just have one health care option available to all citizens and forget all these retired government employees being on hundreds of different policies covered by various taxpayers in various locations. We are already pretty much socialized anyway so why not go all the way with health care. No more 300 million dollar obligation hanging over Duluth. Retirees would be put on the same policy all Americans would receive. Aren't we now on the hook for GM's retirees health care also? It has to be "all" or nothing for this to work. What we have now is killing us. Oh sorry, I must have been dreaming.

Reader's view: We don’t seem to get much for paying property taxes

At the end of May we found out about a city councilor late on paying his property taxes (“Duluth councilor’s tax debt exposed, settled,” May 23). Anyone who thinks he’s the only one can think again.

With the economy the way it is, and with people losing jobs, the last thing to pay is going to be property taxes. And why should anyone hurry to pay property taxes? What do we get in return? Streets we can’t drive on or streets that don’t get plowed or swept. Or we help fund a school board that has gone out of control and is going to cause its school district to go bankrupt.

The city, with out-of-control spending, is not listening to anyone.

So maybe let’s all stop paying property taxes, and maybe then the mayor and school board will listen to us.

But then there’s another problem citizens of Duluth are facing. That is paying, on average, $7,000 to repair personal sewer lines. Why? Who says my sewer line is leaking? Until the city can prove my sewer line is leaking, Mayor Don Ness and the city of Duluth Water and Gas and Sewer can watch out for lawsuits. The city has hired people over the past year with extra equipment and not done repairs to the city sewer system to prevent problems. That is why we are in this mess.

So pay your property taxes — and a little bit more.

I'm curious why Brandon Stahl didn't ask Sharla Gardner why she told Todd Fedora and the Council that she paid for all of her trip to Japan and that if a councilor had taken any money from sister cities it would be a conflict of interest.

It seems like an obvious questions given the transcript he published.

Was the question ever asked of Councilor Gardner? I would like to know the answer, or an explanation of why it was not asked.

STARFIRE: Erik H, although it may seem as a good idea to have asked this question, it now appears clear that the answer would change each time her mouth opened. We have heard several different stories already. I can't wait for the next version.

80561 - Fri Jun 5 08:45:04 2009 - [Duluth - A city of unaccountability] By: Iwanna No
The real problem in Duluth is that ultimately there is little to no accountability for public employees. One way or another the charges will be dropped, forgotten or covered up. Perhaps another 'retirement' is in the works or a switch to a 'different job' or 'department.' When it comes to improper actions by public employees, apparently the wrong doers have pull. Immunity is granted for almost any illegal or corrupt act.

What happens to those employees who cause citizens and coworkers to seek assistance from the Minnesota Human and Civil Rights Department? What an outrage that these employees keep their jobs after destroying the future for hard working, honest people.

There appears to be a self governing body within our local government with it's own code and rules for our city. These folks are also some of the highest paid citizens in our town. They control and abuse the system while the rest of hard working tax paying citizens pay their way. It seems that those running our town are the same ones running it into the ground.

Okay, here's the latest lie, from the news report on WDIO's broadcast of tonight:

"It was not something I gave a great deal of thought to because the ticket had already been purchased, and I paid an amount that I thought would go toward the ticket fee," Gardner said.

This is in contrast to Brandon Stahl's article of this morning. Keep in mind, the ticket was purchased in JUNE, the trip didn't occur until September. Hardly "the ticket had already been purchased". Here is from Stahl's article:

“I’ve always known we paid for her airline ticket,” Kadlec said of Gardner. “Perhaps she had a misunderstanding of what she paid to us. I can’t speak for her.”

Kadlec said Sister Cities bought a ticket specifically for her and Gardner to go on the trip, and never for the mayor. In the memo of the check to the travel agency dated JUNE 5, 2008, is written “Plane tickets for Melissa and Sharla Gardner to Ohara.”

Heh, folks, the trip to Ohara didn't occur until SEPTEMBER. The "ticket had already been purchased". Three months in advance of the trip? And the memo is specifically for Melissa and Sharla Gardner. When are folks gonna wake up? This woman comes from the Alan Netland school of truthisms.

080556 - Thu Jun 4 23:16:02 2009 - [Lies, Lies, Lies, yeahhh] By: Ellen D
Our girlfriend is back in town:

D.G.R. called it for what it is, and did so very succinctly. This controversy is total b.s. Councilor Gardner was asked by the mayor to go to Japan on city business. This was not a pleasure trip and she would not have gone if the mayor had not asked her to do so. Councilor Fedora questioned it, b/c I believe he's part of an orchestrated attempt by a group of people to discredit city councilors (and private citizens) who might not be as progressive or as pro-business interests as Fedora clearly is. If Mayor Ness had asked Councilor Fosle to go to Ohara, you know Fedora never would have said anything -- if you think I'm wrong, well, I have a bridge to Wisc. I'd like to sell you. And everyone who dislikes Gardner, AFSCME, the DFL, outspoken women, progressives, yada yada yada, blah, blah, blah, is now jumping on this hate-filled bandwagon, trying to scapegoat her for everything they don't like about Duluth and the local political scene. The fact is -- it all boils down to the contract between Sister Cities and the City of Duluth being flawed, since the contract contradicts the city charter. Not Gardner's fault. And I for one am getting sick and tired of banging my head against this wall of stupidity and hatred that's been created here and on Buzz, so I'm going to just wait for the city attorney to make his determination and go about my much more interesting life. Thank god the decision doesn't rest with a lot of cranky, ill-informed, and mean bloggers who want to take down Councilor Gardner really because of who she is and what they think she represents, and not because of anything unethical she may or may not have done.

Heh, Claire, how do you explain away the lies? There conflict of interest is there but we'll not discuss that this time around. BUT, how do you explain the lies. I think that was a song from the 80s . . . "Lies, Lies, Lies yeahhh. Lies, Lies, Lies, yeahhh"

Cuneo and Gardner in the same ship, or should we call it a torpedo.

And, by the way, I wonder if Jay Fosle was asked to go on this trip, would he go? Can someone ask him?
